Did you know that when Norm Cash hung up his playing cleats, his 377 career home runs were the fourth most by an American League left-handed hitter, behind Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig?

Did you know that when Norm Cash hung up his playing cleats, his 374 career home runs with Detroit were the second most in Tigers history, and through today, remain the second most? Do you know who is first? [Answer]

Norm Cash was ranked by Bill James (The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, Free Press Publishing, 06/13/2003, Page 440) as the twentieth best first baseman in baseball history (ahead of these Hall of Fame First Basemen: #22 Roger Connor, #24 George Sisler, #25 Frank Chance, #36. Jim Bottomley, #52. Jake Beckley). James wrote:

Cash never played baseball as a youth. "We had 250 acres of good, fertile land and it has to be worked," Cash told Sport magazine in 1961. "I can remember driving a tractor some days from sunup to sundown when I was ten. You get strong wrists. Sitting there driving that thing ten or fifteen hours a day takes a tremendous amount of strength." His high school didn't have a baseball team, but he got a scholarship to a junior college as a football player. The Juco didn't have a baseball team either, but some of his teammates organized a town team, and so Cash tried baseball. He was good at it the moment he started ...

On July 15, 1973, Nolan Ryan was pitching his second no-hitter of the season, against the Tigers at Tiger Stadium. For his third at bat, Norm Cash unscrewed a table leg in the clubhouse, and went to the plate with the table leg instead of a bat. The umpire noticed, and made him switch to a bat. He struck out, and Ryan completed the no-hitter.

Norm Cash Table Leg Incident | Ernie Harwell Tells Story | MLB Video Properties, Inc.

In 1961, Norm Cash had a league leading .361 batting average (Top 25) as well as 41 home runs (Top 25) -- making him the last player in the American League to hit forty-or-more home runs and bat better than .350. Only four junior circuit players matched that feat before Cash -- Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx and Babe Ruth. [Batting Champions: Year by Year]
