Cesar Cedeno Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Did you know that Cesar Cedeno won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards in the outfield, 1972 through 1976? Only three other National League outfielders had five-or-more at that point: Willie Mays (12-straight), Roberto Clemente (12 straight) and Curt Flood (7-straight).
Did you know that Cesar Cedeno was the first Houston Astros outfielder to ever win a Gold Glove Award? Did you know after he won his last Gold Glove in 1976, it would take thirty-three years before another Astros' outfielder put a Gold Glove on his shelf? Do you know who that outfielder was? [Answer]
Cesar Cedeno Hits for the Cycle (Box Score) | The Vernon Daily Record | August 3, 1972 | Page 8<Baseball Almanac Research Library
On August 2, 1972, Cesar Cedeno started a Houston Astros hit parade (sixteen hits, by eight Astros, across nine-innings) with a double in the first inning. Two innings later, the hard hitting center fielder hit a two-run homer, starting the scoring parade (10 runs). In the bottom of the fifth, ahead 3-1, with opposing pitcher Gary Nolan still on the mound, Cedeno hit a single to right field, enable Roger Metzger - who led off the inning with a triple - to trot home from third. In the eighth, Metzger had the single, Cedeno had the triple, and history was made - Cesar completed the first cycle in Houston Astros history.
On August 9, 1976, Cesar Cedeno hit a triple in the first inning, with a little help from a Cardinals' righty Bob Forsch. Five innings later, not one of the 12,395 fans at Busch Stadium was thinking cycle, but Cedeno led off the sixth with a homer, doubled in the seventh, then singled in the eighth, completing his second cycle - which was also the second cycle by a Houston Astros' player, and through today, Cedeno remains the only player with two cycles in Houston history.

What do Cesar Cedeno, Rickey Henderson and Joe Morgan have in common? They are the only three players in baseball history to steal fifty-or-more bases and hit twenty-or-more home runs in three (or more) different seasons. Cedeno was the first, 1972-1973-1974, Morgan joined him next, 1973-1974-1976, and Henderson had his third in 1990, after back-to-back years in 1985-86, but surpassed them both with his fourth in 1993. No player since, has ever done it twice.
