Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Eric Chavez, the five-tool third baseman with extraordinary skill and a low-key California personality who won six straight Gold Glove awards and became the only star of the famed Moneyball A's to sign a long-term deal to stay in Oakland, is retiring Wednesday after an exceptional 16-plus-year career. Chavez rode great natural ability that allowed him to post six 25-homer seasons before he was 28 and unusual dedication and work ethic that transformed him from an 'all hit' prodigy to become one of baseball's best third basemen. He would later reinvent himself as a student of hitting and became a high-percentage bench player. But while Chavez characteristically expressed no regret save for the one disappointment over never quite reaching the World Series with the overachieving A's teams or star-studded Yankees teams -- despite some very close calls -- his interesting, bifurcated career path may leave some one wondering what might have been if not for a string of mid-to- late-career injuries." - Jon Heyman (CBS Sports, 07/30/2014, Eric Chavez, a star who stayed barely out of the limelight, retires, Source)

Eric Cesar Chavez was a Major League Baseball player for the Oakland Athletics (1998–2010), New York Yankees (2011–2012), and Arizona Diamondbacks (2013–2014). Although his career was hampered by injuries, he was an elite defensive player at the hot corner.

Did you know that when Eric Chavez made his first Opening Day start, on April 5, 1999, he was only 21 years, 119 days old? The next youngest A's Opening Day starter took the field in 1980, when he was 21 years, 106 days old, and his name was Rickey Henderson!

Did you know that when Eric Chavez hit for the cycle, on June 21, 2000, it was the third by an OAKLAND Athletics player, the fourteenth in franchise history, and the first cycle ever completed in the Oakland Coliseum?

Did you know that when Eric Chavez hit thirty-two home runs in 2001, he broke the team record for most homers by a third baseman during a single season? Do you remember what A's third baseman hit thirty-one homers in 1969? [Answer]

Did you know that Eric Chavez (.972 in 2001) was just the second A's third baseman to lead the American League in fielding, joining Carney Lansford (.980 in 1987, .979 in 1988, .970 in 1990)? Rawlings never awarded Lansford with a Gold Glove, so when Chavez won his first in 2001, he became the first Athletics third baseman to ever receive the honor.

Eric Chavez ended his career with six consecutive (2001-2006) Gold Gloves at third base - only Brooks Robinson (16 straight) and Mike Schmidt (9 straight, 10 total) had more. When Chavez won his last Gold Glove in 2006, his .987 fielding percentage at third base was the fourth best in American League history, and the highest by an A's third baseman.

Did you know that Eric Chavez hit 25-or-more home runs in six consecutive seasons (2000-2005) with the Athletics, one of only two players in franchise history, and the other was named Jimmie Foxx (1929-1935)?

Did you know that Eric Chavez "only" won a single Silver Slugger Award, in 2002, but was just the second A's player - at any position - to earn both a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger in the same season? [Silver & Gold Club]

Eric Chavez Hits for the Cycle

Eric Chavez Hits for the Cycle | The Honolulu Advertiser | June 22, 2000 | Section D

In 2009, Eric Chavez made his tenth Opening Day start at third base, breaking the previous record (9) for Opening Day starts by an A's third baseman set previously by Sal Bando and Carney Lansford. Chavez had one more in Oakland on April 5, 2010, tying Jimmy Dykes for second most all-time Opening Day starting assignments (at any position).
