Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"No, it never bothered me to be known as the player traded for himself, but there was more to the story. (Casey) Stengel really didn't know what he wanted when he asked for me, then after changing his mind, sent me back. I was happy about it actually, my wife and kids were still back in Cleveland, plus the return deal involved cash, enough for them to buy a new scoreboard." - Chiti, Harry. Letter to Baseball Almanac. 27 September 1990.

Harry Dominic Chiti was a Major League Baseball player with the Chicago Cubs (1950-1952, 1955-1956), Kansas City Athletics (1958-1960), Detroit Tigers (1960-1961), and New York Mets (1962). When Harry made his big league debut on September 27, 1950, he was only seventeen years old, the youngest player in the majors that season!

Harry Chiti did not play baseball in the majors or the minors in 1953 or 1954, because he served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Harry Chiti made some truly unique baseball history in 1962. The Cleveland Indians sold his contract to the New York Mets on April 26th, and to complete the transaction, it included a clause for a player to be named later. The Mets put Chiti on the field in fifteen games, where he hit .195, committed two errors, and was sent back to Cleveland as the player to be named later, making Harry the first player in baseball history to be traded for himself!

Harry Chiti was once the only player in Major League history traded for himself, but has since been joined by a few other ballplayers who also became the "player to be named later" — including; Brad Gulden (1980), Dickie Noles (1987), and John McDonald (2005).

Mike Royko, a Chicago Tribune staff writer, once wrote, "In the old days you could watch Harry Chiti run to first base in 35 seconds flat!" Source: The Cubbies, Quotations on the Chicago Cubs. Chieger, Bob. Atheneum Publishing. 1 April 1987.
