Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I was with the Red Sox organization in the early 1950s, and Johnny Pesky - everybody called him Needle Nose - was an infielder with the club. I was tall and pretty lanky in those days and had sort of a sidearm motion. He saw me pitch and he said that I pitched like one of his great old teammates, Tex Hughson. He began calling me Tex and it stuck." - Tex Clevenger in Yankees: Where Have You Gone? (Maury Allen, Sports Publishing LLC, 02/01/2004, Tex Clevenger, Page 216)

Truman Eugene Clevenger was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Boston Red Sox (1954), Washington Senators (1956-1960), Los Angeles Angels (1961) and New York Yankees (1961-1962). Tex, his nickname, was scouted out of Visalia High School (Visalia, CA), went unsigned, and took a scholarship to Fresno State College, getting signed by the Red Sox his junior year.

Tex Clevenger went from college baseball to the Class C San Jose Red Sox, posted an impressive 16-2 record his first year in the minors, won the 1953 California League MVP Award, and made it the majors the very next season after a strong Spring Training. His rookie card:

On December 14, 1960, the Los Angeles Angels drafted Tex Clevenger in the Major League Baseball Expansion Draft. The rosters of the two new franchises, the Angels and Washington Senators (Texas Rangers), were filled out on that date and Tex was the fourth selection by Los Angeles, following Jerry Casale (3rd), Duke Maas (2nd), and Eli Grba (1st).

When Tex Clevenger took the field in Fenway Park, on April 15, 1961, he became the first Angel to wear #32 in a regular season game.
