"Conlan became a professional umpire by accident. During a 1935 Chicago White Sox-Browns game, Conlan, a Chicago White Sox outfielder, was asked to fill in for Red Ormsby, who was overcome by heat. The next year he began his career in umpiring. Conlan joined the National League in 1941 and retired in 1964." - Umpires in Baseball Hall of Fame. MLB Advanced Media. 30 June 2014.

John Bertrand Conlan was a Major League Baseball player with the Chicago White Sox (1934-1935). Jocko, his nickname, was an outfielder at LaSalle High School, an outfielder in the minors (for thirteen years), and an outfielder in the majors—so how did he become an umpire?

On July 28, 1935 (Game 1 | Game 2), the Chicago White Sox played a twin bill at Sportsman's Park versus the St. Louis Browns. The Pale Hose defeated the Brownies 14-6 in game one, Red Ormsby was the home plate umpire, Harry Geisel was the first base ump. Before game two started, Ormsby fell ill and Jocko Conlan literally stepped from the dugout — in his White Sox uniform — and onto the field to umpire at first. To keep it fair, Ollie Bejma stepped from the dugout — in his Browns uniform — and onto the field to umpire at third. Conlan recalled that exact day saying, "I can remember thinking that I didn't want to show any favoritism to my own team, but when I called my teammate, Luke Appling, out at first on a close play, I not only had a helluva argument with Appling, but I also had to fight with my own manager."

Jocko Conlan officiated five World Series (1945, 1950, 1954, 1957, 1961) and six All-Star games (1943, 1947, 1950, 1953, 1958, 1962). He was the last National League umpire to wear a chest protector over his clothes, but never allowed it to obscure his signature polka dot bow tie.
