Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"He (Ty Cobb) was still fighting the Civil War, and as far as he was concerned we were all damn Yankees. But who knows, if he hadn't had that terrible persecution complex he never would've been about the best ballplayer who ever lived." - Sam Crawford in The 50 Most Dynamic Duos in Sports History (Robert W. Cohen, Taylor Trade Publishing, 01/07/2015, Page 54)

In 1883, Francis Richter founded The Sporting Life, a weekly magazine devoted to coverage of all sports, with an emphasis on baseball. In 1887, Richter, and other baseball journalists, formed the Base Ball Reporters Association of America, also referred to as the National Base Ball Reporters' Association. And in 1914, Richter wrote the History and Records of Baseball: the American Nation's Chief Sport (Philadelphia: Sporting Life Publishing Co., 1914). Samuel Earl Crawford, nicknamed "Wahoo Sam", was a Major League Baseball player for the Cincinnati Reds (1899 to 1902) and Detroit Tigers (1903 to 1917). He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1957, after playing 19 seasons in the major leagues and setting several incredible records. Lets look at more numbers of interest as they relate to the greatest triples hitter in baseball history:

1 - Sam Crawford was a National League home run champion once, in 1901, with the Cincinnati Reds. Sam Crawford was an American League home run champion once as well, in 1908, with the Detroit Tigers - the first player to lead both American League and the National League in home runs!

2 - Sam Crawford led the American League in at-bats twice during his Hall of Fame career, 1908 (591 at-bats) and 1913 (609 at-bats). [Year by Year Leaders for At Bats]

3 - Sam Crawford was a three-time RBI champion, leading the American League in runs batted in during the 1910 (120 RBI | Top 25), 1914 (104 RBI | Top 25) and 1915 (112 RBI | Top 25) season. [Year by Year Leaders for Runs Batted In]

5 - Sam Crawford was the first player in Major League history to lead either league in triples five times, topping the junior circuit in 1903, 1910, 1913, 1914 and 1915. His American League record (5x) was tied by Willie Wilson. Stan Musial holds the National League record, which was also five seasons. However, Wahoo Sam also led the National League in triples once (1902), making him the only player in Major League history to lead a league in triples hit six times during a career. [Yearly Triples Records]

26 - Sam Crawford hit 26 triples in 1914, tying the still-standing American League single season record set by Shoeless Joe Jackson in 1912. [Single Season Triples Records]

309 - Sam Crawford hit 60 triples with the Reds (NL), and 249 triples with the Tigers (AL), putting him on top of the Top 1,000 Triples Hitters in Major League history!
