Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The thing is, when he's (Chris Davis) relaxed, there's not many people better. I think that's what he needs. It always helps to be secure to where you can go about your own work, do your own thing and strive for your goals without having to be constantly looking over your shoulder thinking, 'What's this guy doing? What's that guy doing?'" - Teammate Tommy Hunter (Ghiroli, Brittany. O's have faith in Davis' ability to prove his worth. 5 March 2012.)

Did you know that on April 5, 2013, Chris "Crush" Davis joined Willie Mays, Mark McGwire and Nelson Cruz as the only big league players to hit a home run in the first four games of a season (2013 Game by Game Logs)? After joining the "club" teammate Adam Jones said of Davis, "You put him in the Grand Canyon, he'll hit it out."

Chris Davis, Baltimore Orioles

Chris Davis | 2013 Baltimore Orioles Composite 8x10 | Baseball Almanac Collection

In 2013, Chris Davis had 42 doubles and 53 home runs becoming only the third player in baseball history with a 40+ double / 50+ home run season. The other two? Babe Ruth with the 1921 New York Yankees (44 doubles and 59 home runs) and Albert Belle with the 1995 Cleveland Indians (42 doubles and 50 home runs).

The fifty-three home runs set a new Baltimore Orioles single season franchise record, breaking the mark set by (lefty) Brady Anderson who had fifty home runs in 1996. The team record for home runs in a season by a right-handed hitter is held by Frank Robinson, who had forty-nine in 1966.

In 2015, Chris Davis led all American League sluggers in home run, his second home run title, the first two-time home run champion in Baltimore Orioles history. That same year, Davis struck out two-hundred eight times, a new Birds record for strikeouts in a season.

Chris Davis Bat

Chris Davis Bat | Louisville Slugger M356 | 35 Inch / 33 Ounces

Chris Davis won a Silver Slugger Award in 2013, the third by a Baltimore Orioles first bagger, behind Eddie Murray (1983 & 1984) and Rafael Palmeiro (1998). Perhaps it had something to do with his Louisville Slugger M9 / M356 (pictured above)?

Tom Worgo in Baseball Digest wrote (March / April 2014, Page 48), "Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis earned the nickname Crush davis by emerging as the game's breakout star in 2013. It fits. With his Popeye-sized forearms, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Davis looks like an NFL linebacker. He hits towering home runs to all parts of the field, using one of the largest pieces of lumber in baseball: a 35-inch, 33-ounce bat."
