Andre Dawson was born on Saturday, July 10, 1954, in Miami, Florida. Dawson was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 11, 1976, with the Montreal Expos. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Andre Dawson baseball stats page.
"Determination made Andre Dawson a great player – determination to come back after more than a dozen knee operations, determination to show baseball how overlooked he was during his first 11 years playing north of the border, determination to become one of the most well-rounded players in the game’s history. Andre Dawson showed that determination on his face with a menacing scowl at the plate and was one of baseball’s true five-tool players. He could run, hit, hit with power, field, and throw and was among baseball’s best in each category." - Baseball Researcher Dan D'Addona (SABR Biography Project, 04/30/2011, 'Andre Dawson', Source)

Andre Dawson Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Did you know that Ted Williams and Andre Dawson are the only two Major League ballplayers to have hit a home run off a father/son pitching duo? Teddy Ballgame joined the club first when he went deep off Thornton Lee on September 17, 1939 then his son Don Lee on September 2, 1960. The Hawk became the second member when he went deep off Pedro Borbon on June 10, 1977 then off his son Pedro Borbon on August 16, 1995.
Andre Dawson is one of only two (Gary Carter is the other one) Hall of Fame inductees depicted wearing a Montreal Expos uniform. The only two in franchise history! Let's take a look at some other "Awesome Dawson" numbers of interest:
Andre Dawson | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 2010 (HOF)
2 - Andre Dawson hit two home runs in an inning on July 30, 1978, and on September 24, 1985. The Hawk and Willie McCovey were the only two players in Major League history to hit two home runs in one inning twice during a career at that time.
6 - Andre Dawson won six consecutive Gold Glove Awards (1980-1985) while playing in Montreal, then two more in a row after being traded to Chicago (1987-1988), finishing his career with eight Golded Gloves, second most in the senior circuit at the time of his retirement, behind Roberto Clemente and Willie Mays, who each had twelve.
8 - Andre Dawson wore #8 his entire career with the Chicago Cubs, where he was very popular. When the Cubs scheduled the team's first ever night game at Wrigley Field, they chose August 8, 1988 (08/08/88) to partly honor their All-Star outfielder. The game, however was rained out, so the first official night game was on August 9, 1988.
10 - Andre Dawson wore #10 his entire career with the Montreal Expos, who retired it in 1997 in his honor (the number had been previously retired for Rusty Staub). After the franchise moved to Washington, the Montreal Canadiens raised a banner in the Bell Centre to commemorate all of the retired Expos numbers, including Dawson's. In 2010 the Washington Nationals franchise placed Dawson in its "Ring of Honor" at Nationals Park.
12 - Andre Dawson had twelve knee surgeries during his career (Source: HOF), prompting Shawon Dunston to say, "If Andre didn’t have bad knees, he would have finished with 600 home runs and 500 stolen bases!"
71 - Andre Dawson holds the Expos career record for sacrifice flies (71), and is the only player to hit 200 home runs and steal 200 bases with Montreal. When The Hawk was active, he had single-season team records for home runs (32 in 1983, now 7th), runs batted in (113 in 1983, now 4th), extra base hits (78 ini 1983, now 7th), and sacrifice flies (18 in 1983, which is still the record).
300 - Andre Dawson is one of only eight players in Major League history to record over 300 home runs and 300 stolen bases in his career (300-300 Club); the other players to accomplish this are Carlos Beltran, Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonds, Steve Finley, Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez, and Reggie Sanders.
400 - Andre Dawson is also one of only four players in Major League history to record over 400 home runs and 300 stolen bases in his career (400-300 Club); the other players to accomplish this are Barry Bonds, Willie Mays and Alex Rodriguez.
2,627 - Andre Dawson once held the record for most career games played (2,627) by a player who never appeared in a World Series. He is now in second place, behind Rafael Palmeiro (2,831).

The Hawk played with four Major League teams, is closely associated with the Montreal Expos franchise, but as a Chicago Cub he hit for the cycle on April 29, 1987 (10th in Cubs history), won a Most Valuable Player Award in 1987 (7th in Cubs history), and won a Home Run Championship in 1987 (19th in Cubs history).
