"I'm from upstate New York and was really never much of a Yankee fan. In fact when I told my dad the Yankees had drafted me, he told me to leave the house. He was only kidding...but he wasn't much of a Yankee fan either." - Jim Deshaies in Baseball Digest (Kevin O'Keefe, "Jim Deshaies, Another Astro Winner, Waiting in Wings", May 1987)

Jim Deshaies Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Have you ever wondered which Major League players have had the most at-bats, but fewest extra base hits? There are exactly five players with more than 300 at-bats, that have never hit a double, never hit a triple, and never hit a home run, giving them zero extra base hits. They are, in order by least-to-most at-bats; Pat Zachry (318 ABs / 0 XBH), Frank Castillo (338 ABs / 0 XBH), Barry Zito (344 ABs / 0 XBH), Virgil Barnes (371 ABs / 0 XBH), and Jim Deshaies (373 ABs / 0 XBH).
On September 23, 1986, Jim Deshaies started a game in the Astrodome in front of 27,734 fans. In the top of the first inning, Deshaies struck out the first three batters he faced; Steve Sax, Reggie Williams, then Enos Cabell. In the second, Deshaies kept cruising, striking out the next three batters; Pedro Guerrero, Alex Trevino, then Jeff Hamilton. In the third, Deshaies was flirting with history, striking out Dave Anderson and Jose Gonzalez, giving Jim eight consecutive strikeouts from the start of the game, one shy of the Major League record set over one-hundred years earlier, by Hall of Famer Mickey Welch, who mowed down the first 9-in-a-row, on August 28, 1884. [Most Strikes From Start of Game Records]
The ninth batter, pitcher Dennis Powell, should have been an easy strikeout, enabling Deshaies to tie the record, but Dodger skipper Tommy Lasorda sent in a pinch hitter, Larry See, who hit a flyball to second, ending the streak at eight- a remarkable feat nonetheless that Topps baseball even featured in their 1987 set (image below).
Since Deshaies, only one pitcher has ever flirted with this record, tying Jim in 2014. Do you know who that New York Mets twirler was? [Answer]
