R.A. Dickey was born on Tuesday, October 29, 1974, in Nashville, Tennessee. Dickey was 26 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 22, 2001, with the Texas Rangers. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive R.A. Dickey baseball stats page.
"Leave it to (R.A.) Dickey to revel in the supernatural. He has been, perhaps, the most dependable starter in the National League this season, doing it almost exclusively with the game’s most capricious pitch. As Dickey prepares to throw his knuckleball, he imagines two portals between him and the catcher. Both are vertical rectangles, the first for his body, the second for his pitch. Moving so reliably through them has transported Dickey to a place even baseball's greatest knuckleballer, Phil Niekro, never knew. 'I had a few streaks, but nothing like he’s going through,' said Niekro, a Hall of Famer with 318 victories. 'I don’t know if any other knuckleballer has ever been on a hot streak like he has been. He is just dynamite right now.'" - Kepner, Tyler. Staff Writer. New York Times: Otherworldly Pitch Meets Its Jedi Master. 16 June 2012.

R.A. Dickey Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Robert Allen Dickey was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Texas Rangers (2001, 2003-2006), Seattle Mariners (2008), Minnesota Twins (2009), New York Mets (2010-2012), Toronto Blue Jays (2013-2016), and Atlanta Braves (2017). When R.A., his nickname, made his big league debut on April 22, 2001, he became the first Montgomery Bell Academy graduate to play in the majors!
Did you know that on June 13, 2012, R.A. Dickey set the New York Mets franchise record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched with 32 2/3, breaking Jerry Koosman's 39-year-old mark by one full inning? Mets skipper Terry Collins said after the record was broken, "I've never seen anything like this. Never. I've seen some dominant pitching, but nothing like what he's going through right now."
Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro, and a fellow knuckleballer, also observed the streak and said told the New York Times, "I had a few streaks, but nothing like he's going through. I don't know if any other knuckleballer has ever been on a hot streak like he has been. He is just dynamite right now."
R.A. Dickey | Knuckleball Cartoon | Artist: Mark Matcho | ESPN The Magazine
On August 17, 2008, R.A. Dickey tied the American League record for most wild pitches in an inning with four. His "rough" fifth inning tied the mark originally set by Hall of Famer Walter Johnson (September 21, 1914) then tied by Kevin Gregg on July 25, 2004.
On June 13, 2012, R.A. Dickey allowed only one hit during a complete game victory, and struck out twelve batters. Five days later, on June 18, 2012, Dickey allowed only one hit during a complete game victory, and struck out thirteen batters. The last pitcher with two complete game one-hitters, and twelve or more strikeouts in each game, during the same season was Nolan Ryan. The one before The Ryan Express? Sandy Koufax!
R.A. Dickey Video | Dickey Discusses His Knuckleball | 20 October 2015
In 2012, R.A. Dickey led the National League in strikeouts (230 / Top 25), complete games (5 / Top 25), shutouts (3 / Top 25), games started (33) and innings pitched (233.2). His dominating performance (from the start of the season to the end of the season) helped Dickey get named to his first career All-Star Game, win the Sporting News Pitcher of the Year Award, win the Players Choice Outstanding Pitcher of the Year Award, and became the first knuckleball pitcher in big league history to win the Cy Young Award!
