Did you know that Larry, his nickname, was the first player to go directly to the majors from the Negro leagues? Too easy? Did you know that when Doby took the field with the Indians on July 5, 1947, he became the first African-American player in American League history?

Did you know that Larry Doby was named one of the 100 Greatest Cleveland Indians Players ever? As part of the club’s 100th Anniversary Celebration in 2001, a panel of veteran baseball writers, historians and executives selected a roster of the Top 100 Greatest Indians and Doby was named one of the twenty-three outfielders.

Larry Doby hit 253 regular season home runs, of 112 different pitchers, in 10 different ballparks. In that set, 98 of those homers put his team ahead, 27 tied of them tied the game, 3 were walk-off shots. However, Doby is often remembered for his first postseason home run (which are not part of regular season stats), a third inning shot off Johnny Sain, during Game 4 of the 1948 World Series, the first home run hit by an African American during a Fall Classic.

In 1952, Larry Doby hit an American League leading thirty-two home runs, becoming the first left-handed home run champion for the Cleveland Indians. Do you know what Indian righty came before Doby? [Answer] Doby led the AL again in 1954, and through today, remains the only two-time home run leading left-handed slugger from Cleveland.
