"When I think back to the 1978 World Series, my first memory is not of coming close to the series record for consecutive hits (he had 5 in a row), but rather of the 9-year-old boy sitting on the cardboard second base in a plowed-under tobacco field. That boy lives that dream in my memory every day." - Brian Doyle in Moments in the Sun: Baseball's Briefly Famous (Mark McGuire & Michael Sean Gormley, McFarland Publishing, 04/01/1999, Page 90)

Brian Reed Doyle was a Major League Baseball player with the New York Yankees (19781979, 1980), and Oakland Athletics (1981). When Brian reached the majors on April 30, 1978, he became the second Caverna High School graduate to play in the majors, joining Denny Doyle, his brother!

Brian Doyle was called-up to the majors when (2B) Willie Randolph suffered a knee injury. Doyle only hit .192 during the regular season, but was kept on the postseason roster to continue playing second, platooning with infielder Fred Stanley. Doyle went 7-for-16 (.438) in the 1978 World Series—leading the Yanks in hitting!
Brian Doyle appeared in all six games of the 1978 World Series, collecting seven hits in sixteen at-bats, driving in two runs, and scoring four times. "I didn't even know I was going to be playing the World Series. I got in a cab to go to Dodger Stadium with Yogi (Berra) and he told me, 'Kid, you're gonna be playing.' The game was in a few hours, and that was the first I had heard about me playing, but I wasn't nervous," he told Baseball Almanac. "I had never really been nervous playing baseball. Was I concerned with keeping my adrenaline down? Oh yeah, but not nerves."
During Game 4, Doyle was 0-for-4, and struggling at the plate. With the series tied 2-2 going into Game 5, Doyle got hot, going 3-for-5, scoring two runs, and helping the Bronx Bombers demolish (12-2) the Dodgers. Two days later (Game 6), Brian came to bat in the second inning, a runner was on first and second, the Yanks were down 0-1, and Doyle hit his first career extra base hit, a run scoring double!
Brian Doyle, who batted 8th in the lineup, finished second to Bucky Dent (batting ninth, .417 AVG, 7 RBIs) in the World Series Most Valuable Player Award vote. Willie Randolph commented, "It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. When I think about '78, it's funny, Brian Doyle comes to mind even more than the comeback, because of the job he did. Bucky Dent did a great job as MVP, but I think Brian could have been co-MVP because he did such a phenomenal job for us."
Brian Doyle was barely 5-10 (he told Baseball Almanac he was about 5-09, 150 pounds when he reached the majors) but he was a strong fielder with great instincts. Ron Guidry opined, "If Brian is in the line up, as a pitcher, I know I've got a good defensive back-up to Willie (Randolph). Hey, if he hits anything, that's just extra. He was just a good, solid, fundamental player."
