"(Jacoby) Ellsbury is one of the game's brightest lights, the first American Indian of Navajo descent to reach the Majors, and the newest member of the heralded Draft class of 2005 to break in, after Boston's Craig Hansen, Washington's Ryan Zimmerman, Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki and Kansas City's Alex Gordon. Ultimately, Ellsbury is an 'unfinished product,' according to manager Terry Francona, a prospect in his developmental stage." - McPhillips, Alex. MLB Staff Writer. Ellsbury shows his speed in debut. 1 July 2007.

Jacoby Ellsbury Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Jacoby McCabe Ellsbury was a Major League Baseball player with the Boston Red Sox (2007-2013) and New York Yankees (2014-2017). Did you know that Ellsbury was the first American Indian of Navajo descent to reach the Major League level (Source: American Indian Baseball Players)?
Did you know that Jacoby Ellsbury tied a Major League record for outfielders with 12 putouts in a nine-inning game on May 20, 2009, tying Earl Clark of the Boston Braves, who accomplished the feat in 1929, and Lyman Bostock of the Minnesota Twins, who did it in 1977? [Putout Records]
On June 14, 1980, Jerry Remy stole four bases in a game setting a new Boston Red Sox team-specific record for steals in a game. Jacoby Ellsbury, on August 9, 2010, stole four bases in a game and tied the thirty-year old record. On May 30, 2013, Ellsbury stole five bases in the same game, setting a new Boston Red Sox record (still standing) for most stolen bases in a game.
The Boston Red Sox first stolen base champion was Buddy Myer, who swiped thirty bags in 1928 (Top 25). Six years later, Billy Werber led the league with forty steals, then led the league again in 1935, that time with twenty-nine stolen bases (Top 25), the first Red Sox to lead the league more than once. Dom DiMaggio (1950 / Top 25), Jackie Jensen (1954 / Top 25) and Tommy Harper (1972 / Top 25) rounded out the group of league leading Red Sox, the latter of the three setting the record for most steals in a season in Boston with fifty-four.
Jacoby Ellsbury was a three-time stolen base champion in Boston, leading the American League in 2008 (50 SBs), 2009 (70 SBs) and 2013 (52 SBs) — the only player in Red Sox history to lead the league more than twice, and, when he swiped seventy bags in 2009, he shattered the team-record set by Harper in 1972 and remains the team leader for steals in a season.
In late 2019, writer Will Leitch wrote a story about the 10 best center fielders of the decade (2010-2019 / Source) and ranked them; 1. Mike Trout, 2. Andrew McCutchen, 3. Adam Jones, 4. Lorenzo Cain, 5. Curtis Granderson, 6. Starling Marte, 7. George Springer, 8. Dexter Fowler, 9. Kevin Kiermaier, 10. Jacoby Ellsbury. He included the following for Chief, "If you ignore the injuries and the cumbersome and seemingly endless contract with the Yankees — and neither of those are easy to do — you can remember just how terrific Ellsbury was in his prime. His 2011 season, in which he finished second in AL MVP Award voting, he led the Majors in total bases and put up a 30-30 season and was a terrific defensive center fielder. Ellsbury was never the same player for New York, but he wasn't awful either, until the injuries got the best of him. It's a shame what could have been, but what we had was rather outstanding, don't forget."
Jacoby Ellsbury "only" swiped thirty-nine bases in 2011, well below the seventy steals he had two years earlier, but he also hit thirty-two home runs in 2011, enough to make him the first BoSox player in the 30-30 Club.
