"In story that appeared in The State Journal-Register prior to his Springfield Sports Hall of Fame induction in 1993, Erickson told sportswriter Jim Wildrick that his first game with the Phillies — Sept. 1, 1958 at Pittsburgh — was like old-home week. One of his Philadelphia teammates was fellow Lanphier graduate and future Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts. Springfield's Dick Schofield was with the Pirates after being traded from St. Louis in June, and Springfield's Al Barlick was one of the umpires. "Talk about a small world," Erickson said. "Sports Illustrated even picked up on that and ran something on it." Don appeared in nine games for Philadelphia that September, going 0-1 with nine strikeouts, nine walks and one save in 11 2/3 innings. He thought he’d get another shot with Philadelphia in 1959, but instead pitched for the Buffalo team that won the International League championship." - By Dave Kane in The State Journal-Register (08/01/2012, 'Former Lanphier standout Don Erickson dies at 80', Source) |
