"He's (Andy Etchebarren) old school through and through. He comes from a time when players weren't so concerned if it was a contract year. They just played hard all the time and let everything take care of itself." - Author Jeff Seidel in Baltimore Orioles: Where Have You Gone? Cal Ripken Jr., Brooks Robinson, Jim Palmer, and Other Orioles Greats (Sports Publishing. February 4, 2014. Where Have You Gone Andy Etchebarren? ISBN-10: 1613216343.)

Did you know that Andy Etchebarren saved the life of teammate Frank Robinson at a pool party in 1966, the year Robbie earned himself the Triple Crown? Historian / author John C. Skipper in Frank Robinson: A Baseball Biography (McFarland & Company. October 31, 2014. ISBN-10: 0786475617) researched the event in amazing detail:
As invincible as the Orioles seemed to be, an incident away from the ballpark in August could have changed everything. On the night of August 22, many of the players attended a private party at the home of Leonard F. Ruck, a wealthy funeral director and ardent Orioles fan. As Paul Blair, Boog Powell, Moe Drabowsky, Davey Johnson, Andy Etchebarren and others sat around the Rucks' swimming pool, having drinks and cavorting, one thing led to another and players started to try and throw their teammates into the pool. At one point, as Powell pulled at Drabowsky, trying to throw him in, he slipped and hit his head, cutting it open. The cut was so deep that he had to go to the hospital and have stitches. As it turned out, that was minor compared to what happened a few minutes later.
Robby was sitting with the others at poolside but did not want to get tossed in the pool. The biggest reason, unknown to most of his teammates, was that he didn't know how to swim. He ducked away for a moment, put on his swimming trunks and got into the shallow end of the pool, away from the horseplay. As he meandered about in the water, he inadvertently moved into the deep end and was immediately in trouble.
"I went down a couple of times and kept yelling for help every time I surfaced," he said. "My wife thought I was kidding and I guess everyone else did, too.".
Etchebarren saw him and thought he was just fooling around at first, but when he saw Frank go under and not come up, he jumped in the pool to try and help him. Robby was dead weight at the bottom of the pool. Etchebarren shoved him a couple of times but then had to resurface to catch his breath. He went under again, pushed Frank to the surface and pulled him to the side of the pool.
Other players helped him out, and he lay by the side of the pool for about five muntes, then got up, shaken, embarrassed, but okay. "No one seemed too excited right away," said Paul Blair. "But it hit us when we realized what could have happened."
Andy Etchebarren was a two-time All-Star (1966, 1967), who played in four World Series (1966, 1969, 1970, 1971), winning two rings (1966, 1970), and is sometimes remembered for a double play he hit into during Game 2 of the 1966 Fall Classic. Why? The pitcher on the mound was Sandy Koufax and unbeknownst to almost everyone, it was the last batter The Man With The Golden Arm ever pitched to during his hall of fame career.
