Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"No better feeling (hitting a home run) in the whole world. It is what you live for. Sometimes it is what you die for. You put one up there and it makes you feel young again." - Evans, Darrell. Darrell Evans: The Making of a Home Run Hitter. Falls, Joe. Baseball Digest Writer. July 1986. Page 25.

Darrell Wayne Evans was a Major League Baseball player with the Atlanta Braves (1969-1976), San Francisco Giants (1976-1983), Detroit Tigers (1984-1988), and Atlanta Braves (1989). "Darrell Evans is, in my opinion, the most underrated player in baseball history, absolutely number one on the list." Bill James wrote that in The New Historical Baseball Abstract (Free Press Publishing, 05/08/2020, Page 547), where he ranked Evans as the tenth best third baseman in baseball history! Here are a few reasons why James made that statement:

Did you know that the 1973 Atlanta Braves featured the first trio — Hank Aaron (40), Darrell Evans (41) and Davey Johnson (43) — of teammates to each hit at least forty home runs during the same season (1973) in Major League history?

Darrell Evans won exactly one home run crown, when he led the American League in 1985, with forty long balls at the age of thirty-eight—the oldest player in history (at that time) to lead his league in home runs. The veteran slugger had eclipsed the forty home run plateau once before, in 1973 (see fact above), with a National League team, making Howdy Doody the first player in baseball history to hit forty homers in both the American and National League.

When Darrell Evans hit thirty-four home runs in 1987, he became the first player in baseball history to hit 30-or-more home runs at the age of forty. The day he hit number thirty: September 18, 1987. The pitcher: Bill Wegman. The location: Tiger Stadium. The details: Bottom of the fifth inning, one out, Alan Trammell on first. The video:

When Darrell Evans hung up his cleats, he had walked to first base 1,605 times, the eighth most in baseball history at the time of his retirement! Six of the seven ahead of him are in the Hall of Fame; Eddie Yost (1,614), Mel Ott (1,708), Mickey Mantle (1,733), Carl Yastrzemski (1,845), Joe Morgan (1,865), Ted Williams (2,021), and Babe Ruth (2,062).

When Darrell Evans hit those final eleven home runs in 1989, he broke a tie with Carl Yastrzemski—both sluggers had hit forty-nine home runs after turning forty. Evans finished with 60 career home runs after age forty, a total surpassed by only two players in baseball history? Do you know who they are? [Answer]

When Darrell Evans is compared to Hall of Fame Third Basemen, he has a higher on base percentage than Jimmy Collins, Freddie Lindstrom, Brooks Robinson, and Deacon White. His slugging average is higher than Collins, George Kell, and Robinson. He has more hits than Frank Baker, Collins, Kell, Lindstrom, and White. Only three of them have more career home runs, Chipper Jones, Eddie Mathews, and Mike Schmidt!

Reggie Jackson was the first player to hit at least one-hundred home runs with three different big league teams (269 with the Athletics, 144 with the Yankees and 123 with the Angels). The second? Darrell Evans (142 with the Giants, 141 with the Tigers and 131 with the Braves)!
