Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Augie Galan: A solid big league outfielder for 16 seasons, eight of them with the Cubs, Augie Galan once went an an entire season without grounding into a double play. A childhood injury nearly derailed Galan's dreams of playing in the majors, even after he'd prove himself at the highest strata of minor league baseball. In 1935, Galan was the left fielder for Charlie Grimm's pennant-winning Cubs. Galan batted .314 and led the N.L. with 133 runs scored and 22 stolen bases. In 646 plate appearances, he didn't ground into a single double play... although he did hit into one triple killing. Galan played the first 38 games of the 1936 season before hitting into a DP. The record still stands." - Author Pete Cava in Tales from the Cubs Dugout (Sports Publishing LLC, 04/01/2002, Page 93)

August John Galan was a Major League Baseball player for the Chicago Cubs (1934-1941), Brooklyn Dodgers (1941-1946), Cincinnati Reds (1947-1948), New York Giants (1949), and Philadelphia Athletics (1949). Augie, his nickname, began his career as a switch hitter, however, starting in the latter part of 1943, he only hit left-handed until his retirement.

In 1935, Augie Galan had 203 hits, the first Cubs switch-hitter with a 200-hit season, and through today, the only Cubs switch-hitter with a 200-hit season! The closest any Cubbie switch-hitter has gotten to his record since, 181 hits, in 1969, by Don Kessinger. Do you know what switch-hitter held the record before Augie, 199 hits in 1894? [Answer]

In 1936, Augie Galan was sent to the All-Star Game, the starting center fielder for the senior circuit. In the fifth inning, Galan hit a Schoolboy Rowe pitch to deep right field that deflected off the right-field foul pole, into fair territory, the first All-Star home run hit by a Chicago Cubs player!

In 1937, Augie Galan hit a career high eighteen home runs, including two on June 25, the first in the bottom of the fourth inning, batting lefty, off Freddie Fitzsimmons, the second in the bottom of the eight inning, batting righty, off Ralph Birkofer, the first National League player to hit home runs from both sides of the plate in the same game!

Augie Galan wrapped up a sixteen year career in the majors in 1949, appearing in three Midsummer Classics (1936, 1943, 1944), a two-time stolen base champion (1935, 1937) who also led the National League in runs scored in 1935, and bases on balls in 1943 & 1944. Known more for his offensive skills, Galan was a very smooth outfielder, leading the league in fielding percentage twice, and four additional top ten appearances.
