"(Jim) Gentile, though retired, made some baseball news in 2010 when he got a $5,000 bonus from the Orioles. The team had said they'd give him that money if he led the American League in RBI in 1961, but Gentile finished second with 141, just behind Roger Maris (142). however, the New York Times reported in the summer of 2010 that Elias Sports Bureau officially recognized an RBI change that brought Maris back to 141. And so the Orioles presented Gentile with a $5,000 check before a game." - Seidel, Jeff. Author. Baltimore Orioles: Where Have You Gone?. Sports Publishing. 1 March 2006. Page 40.

Jim Gentile Stats by Baseball Almanac |
James Edward Gentile was a Major League Baseball player with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1957), Los Angeles Dodgers (1958), Baltimore Orioles (1960-1963), Kansas City Athletics (1964-1965), Houston Astros (1965-1966), and Cleveland Indians (1966). Jim, his nickname, was the last BROOKLYN Dodger to wear #12 in a regular season game.
In 1987, Don Mattingly hit six grand slams setting a new Major League record for grand slams in a season (a record since tied by Travis Hafner in 2006). The previous record holders were Jim Gentile, who had five in the American League in 1961, and Ernie Banks, who had five in the National League in 1955 (Mr. Cub still holds the record in the senior circuit, also since tied, by Albert Pujols in 2009).
In 1961, the record setting slams hit by Jim Gentile were recorded on May 9, 1961 (#1), May 9, 1961 (#2), July 2, 1961 (#3), July 7, 1961 (#4) and September 22, 1961 (#5).
Jim Gentile hit Two Grand Slams in One Game on May 9, 1961. It was only the fourth instance in baseball history where one player had two grand slams in the same game, and the first by a Baltimore Orioles player. Pedro Ramos (1st inning) and Paul Giel (2nd inning) were the pitchers who "helped" Diamond Jim make history. [2 Grand Slams in 1 Game]

Did you know that when Jim Gentile drove in 141 RBI in 1961, he led the American League along with Roger Maris and was the first player in a Baltimore Orioles uniform to capture an RBI Championship (the Orioles were originally the St. Louis Browns who had Del Pratt, Ken Williams and Vern Stephens lead the league in a Browns jersey)?
