Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I know what it's like to be on top of the world and I know what it's like to be dragged in the gutter. I've been booed and cheered, ripped and praised, but I'm not the type to regret things. I never backtrack. I deal with things and move on. And the journey I've had here has been incredible. Believe it or not, I wouldn't change a thing. I've enjoyed the ride, the whole circus." - Giambi, Jason. The Giambi Tales. Geffner, Michael P. Cigar Aficionado Staff Writer. September / October 2008.

Jason Gilbert Giambi was a Major League Baseball player with the Oakland Athletics (1995-2001), New York Yankees (2002-2008), Oakland Athletics (2009), Colorado Rockies (2009-2012), and Cleveland Indians (2013-2014). Did you know that Jason was voted the Most Valuable Player during his senior year at South Hills High School (Covina, CA)? Did you know his teammates at SHHS included Cory Lidle, Aaron Small, Shawn Wooten, and his brother, Jeremy Giambi?

In 1996, Jason Giambi started 43 games in left field, 42 games at first base, and 38 games at third base — the first player in Oakland Athletics history to start at 30-or-more games at three different positions during the same season!

The Philadelphia Athletics were an American League team that existed from 1901 to 1954. The franchise moved to Kansas City in 1955, played there until 1967, and became the Oakland Athletics in 1968. Twenty-one times, a Philadelphia Athletics player hit 40-or-more doubles in a season. Why mention this here? When Jason Giambi hit 40 doubles in 1996 (Top 25), it was the first in franchise history by a player wearing an Oakland Athletics uuniform!

The very next year (1997), Jason Giambi hit 41 doubles (Top 25), giving him back-to-back seasons with 40-or-more doubles. That feat, in Athletics franchise history, had been duplicated previously by just three players, Harry Davis (1905-1906), Hall of Fame third baseman Frank Baker (1911-1912), and Hall of Fame left fielder Al Simmons (1925-1926 & 1929-1930).

Jason Giambi went 98-for-278 at home in 1999, a .353 batting average, and the highest at-home batting average in Oakland Athletics history!

On April 3, 2000, hit two home runs in a game, the first Oakland Athletics player with a multi-homer game on Opening Day. The rest of the season, Giambi was unstoppable, setting franchise records for grand slams in a season (4), and on base percentage (.476). The Baseball Writers agreed, making Jason the sixth Most Valuable Player out of Oakland, joining Vida Blue (1971), Reggie Jackson (1973), Jose Canseco (1988), Rickey Henderson (1990) and Dennis Eckersley (1993). From that specific set of MVPs, Giambi was the first-ever first-baseman to receive the honor.

Jason Giambi "only" hit .342 in 2001, good-enough for second place (Top 25) that year in the American League, but it was the best overall by a first baseman, earning Jason his first Silver Slugger Award. Who was the only first baseman to win that same award at that same position before Jason, in Oakland? [Answer]

On September 24, 1925, Babe Ruth hit the first Ultimate Grand Slam in Yankees history. Why share this here? Seventy-seven years later, on May 17, 2002, Jason Giambi became just the second player in Yankees history with a walk-off super slam as well!

In July 1961, Mickey Mantle hit fourteen home runs, the most homers during that specific month by any player in Yankees history. On July 31, 2005, Jason collected the three-hundredth home run of his career, which was the fourteenth home run he hit during the month of July, tyingMickey Mantle!

On September 22, 2008, Yankee Stadium was demolished. The last Major League Baseball game played there took place on September 21, 2008. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jason Giambi hit a clean single to left field, driving in Bobby Abreu, who scored from third – it was the last hit in Yankee Stadium history!

Jason Giambi hit three home runs in a game only once during his entire career, on May 19, 2011. The veteran slugger was 41 years, 131 days old. Noteworthy because at that point in baseball history, only one older player (41 years, 229 days) had ever hit three home runs in a game. Who was it? [Answer]

Jason Giambi officially announced his retirement on February 16, 2015. Less than two-weeks earlier (11 February 2005), he took part in a press conference held at Yankee Stadium, in response to a San Francisco Chronicle article which said Jason's testimony to a federal grand jury had admissions of guilt, in respect to the usage of steroids, before and after he joined the Bronx Bombers. Jason said, "I feel I let down the fans, I feel I let down the media, I feel I let down the Yankees, and not only the Yankees, but my teammates. I accept full responsibility for that, and I'm sorry. I know the fans might want more, but because of all the legal matters, I can't get into specifics. Someday, hopefully, I will be able to."
