Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Ever hear of a major league pitcher without a curve ball? Gibbon is one. 'I come out of a three-quarters overhand delivery or sidearm and the curve is a flat pitch for me. I make my slider do its work." - Joe Gibbon in the San Francisco Examiner (03/08/1966)

Joseph Charles Gibbon was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1960-1965, 1969-1970), San Francisco Giants (1966-1969), Cincinnati Reds (1971-1972) and Houston Astros (1972). Joe, his nickname, was an outstanding basketball player at Ole Miss (averaged 30 points and 14.1 rebonds per game) — so good, the Boston Celtics drafted him in 1957!

Joe Gibbon made the Opening Day roster for the 1960 Pirates, after leading the International League in strikeouts (152) and posting a 16-8 record with a 2.60 ERA. Gabby continued his success, winning his first two decisions, taking the mound in 27 games, and being named to the postseason roster.

The 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates finished with a record of 95-59 (1-tie), seven games in front of the second-place Milwaukee Braves, winning their first National League pennant in 33 seasons. The Bucs faced-off against the heavily favored New York Yankees during the 1960 World Series, whom they defeated 4-3 in one of the most historic Fall Classics ever. Gibbon pitched in Game 2 (a 16-3 loss) and Game 3 (a 10-0 loss) surrendering a historic 3-run homer that cleared the center-field fence to Mickey Mantle — 457 feet from home plate, the first major leaguer to clear that fence in Forbes Field!

The World Series Gate Receipts were totalled up after Game 7 and each player on the Yanks roster received a check for $5,214.64. Each player on the Bucs roster received a check for $8,417.94 — Gibbon's contract that year, only $7,500!

On May 4, 1966, Joe Gibbon started his first game in a Giants uniform, a complete game effort where he struck out seven batters, gave up just four hits, and allowed one earned run. A nice day of work that was overshadowed by one home run, a fifth inning blast hit by Willie Mays, the 512th of his career, one more than Mel Ott, setting a new record for most home runs hit by any National League hitter!
