Don Gile was born on Friday, April 19, 1935, in Modesto, California. Gile was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 25, 1959, with the Boston Red Sox. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Don Gile baseball stats page.
"I have been following the career of the new Jimmie Foxx, 25-year-old Don Gile, catcher-first baseman who played with (Bob) Tillman last year at Minneapolis. Both are listed on the Red Sox roster behind Russ Nixon and Jim Pagliaroni. Don Gile is sure to be retained because of his devastating power. In the third annual March of Dimes game at San Mateo Feb. 12, Don outshone all other participants of the Al-NL All-Stars. He belted two home runs for all of the American League markers in the 7-3 NL win. Last summer with Minneapolis he clouted four home runs in a one game. He could be the right-handed power Fenway Park needs. Don't laugh. When young Jimmie Foxx reported to the A's they had Joe Hauser on first and Mickey Cochrane and Cy Perkins as catchers, yet Foxx wound up in the Hall of Fame." - Powers, Jimmy. Did you know that Don Gile hit three career home runs, in three different seasons, versus three different pitchers, from three different teams, in three different innings? Bear first went deep on September 27, 1960, off Gordon Jones (Orioles), in the bottom of the eight inning. His second homer was a second inning shot on September 23, 1961, versus future hall of famer Whitey Ford (Yankees). His final home run, September 30, 1962, in the bottom of the bottom of the ninth inning versus Jack Jenkins (Senators), a game-winning walk-off shot that was also the last at-bat of Gile's career!
