Luis Gonzalez Stats by Baseball Almanac |
On July 5, 2000, Luis Gonzalez hit a double in the first inning off Shane Reynolds. Two innings later, Reynolds served up a single to Gonzo. Top of the eighth, Marc Valdes on the mound, Gonzo hit a hard line drive to deep left field, hustling out a three-bagger. Doug Henry was up next for the Astros, Gonzalez had his number too, hitting a home run off him in the ninth inning to complete the cycle - the first cycle in franchise history for the Arizona Diamondbacks. A few more Gonzo "did you knows":
Did you know Luis Gonzalez finished the 2001 season with a .325 batting average, tenth best in the senior circuit, but top three amongst outfielders, earning him a Silver Slugger Award - his first, as well as the first one ever won by an Arizona Diamondbacks player?
Did you know Luis Gonzalez hit his 500th career double on April 18, 2006, the twentieth player in Major League history with five-hundred doubles (Top 1,000 All-Time) and three-hundred home runs (Top 1,000 All-Time)?
Did you know Luis Gonzalez had his #20 retired by the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 7, 2010, the first player in franchise history to have his number retired by the team?
Did you know Luis Gonzalez was inducted into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame on July 9, 2011, at the All-Star Fan Fest in Phoenix, Arizona?
During the 2002 Spring Training camp, Luis Gonzalez got rid of his "game-used chewing gum", two pieces to be precise, in an auction that ended on April 15, 2002, the final bid was $10,000! Two gum companies wanted it including Topps, maker of Bazooka gum. Curt Mueller, owner of Mueller Sports Medicine, maker of Quench gum, won and said (Rovell, Darren. ESPN Writer. The gum to savor the longest. 18 April 2002.) he didn't "know Gonzalez from a bale of hay," but he bid $4,500 anyway. Hours later, he won the gum for "only" $10,000. "If this works (the publicity), great. If it doesn't, we'll call it advertising and some kids will get to benefit from the money we give them."
Future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera had one blown save chance in his entire World Series career, during Game 7, of the 2001 World Series, a game winning bloop single into left field that was hit by Luis Gonzalez and resulted in the first world championship title for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
