Jack Graney was born on Thursday, June 10, 1886, in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. Graney was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 30, 1908, with the Cleveland Naps. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Jack Graney baseball stats page.
"Jack Graney: One of the most popular players on the club, the fun-loving Graney had entertained his teammates with his sense of humor and singing. Graney was a successful leadoff man (twice a league leader in walks), and at the season's start he was the Indians' all-time leader in games, runs scored, and triples. In late May, tired by a long road trip, he came down with tonsillitis. When he returned from the hospital, his replacement, Charlie Jamieson, was batting .380, third base in the league. Jamieson held the left field spot for the remainder of the season. Not only did Graney lose his job, he also lost his best friend and on-the-road roommate when, on August 16, Cleveland's star shortstop Ray Chapman was beaned and died the following day." - The Sporting News Publishing Company. Trivia Alert! As leadoff man for the Cleveland Indians, On June 26, 1916, Jack Graney became the first major leaguer of the modern era to appear at the plate wearing an identifying number. The Cincinnati Red Stockings had experimented with numerals on their uniforms in 1883, but the idea didn't catch on. The Indians' numbers (worn on their uniform sleeves) met the same fate. The Cardinals tried numbers briefly in 1923, but it wasn't until the Yankees took the field with large numerals on their backs that the idea began to gain acceptance. Source: The Sporting News.
