Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"One of the things I'm proudest about is that I played for one team. My baseball card looks awesome because it has San Diego all the way down. I grew up in an environment where that kind of stuff was important." - Gwynn, Tony. Tony Gwynn heading for the Hall of Fame. Bloom, Barry. MLB Staff Writer. 27 December 2006. [Tony Gwynn Quotes]

Did you know that Tony Gwynn was highly recruited out of High School not as an outfielder, but rather a point guard? When he went to San Diego State University he was there on a basketball scholarship, he didn't join the baseball team until his sophomore year, and on draft day he was selected by both the San Diego Padres (MLB Draft, 3rd Round, 58th overall) and the San Diego Clippers (NBA Draft, 10th Round, 214th overall).

Not one player in the entire history of the National League has won more batting titles in the senior circuit than Tony Gwynn. His eight batting championships (1984, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997) tied Honus Wagner and the two remain in the batting average record book to this day. Join Baseball Almanac as we take a look at some additional numbers of interest as they relate one of the most consistent hitters in Major League history:

.338 - Tony Gwynn finished his career with a .338 batting average, the seventeenth highest in Major League history, the highest by a San Diego Padres player, and if you review the Top 1,000 you'll notice it's the highest by any player who began his career after World War II.

1 - Tony Gwynn is the all-time (#1) San Diego Padres leader in games played (2,440), at-bats (9,288), runs scored (1,383), hits (3,141), doubles (543), triples (85), RBI (1,138), walks (790), stolen bases (319), and batting average (.338)!

4 - Tony Gwynn, in his fourth at-bat, collected his first hit and shared this recollection, "Fourth time I came up I got a fastball out over the plate and lined it into left center. Bob Dernier was playing center. He dove, and it just went under his glove to the wall for a double. I got to second base and I felt pretty good. My first big league game and I got a hit. Pete Rose is trailing the play. They flash on the board, TONY GWYNN'S FIRST BIG LEAGUE HIT. Pete came over, shook my hand and said, 'Congratulations. Don't catch me in one night.' I remember it like it was yesterday. 'Congratulations' was enough, but the 'Don't catch me in one night' thing really stuck. And I just remember standing there thinking, God, wouldn't it be great to have a career like he did."

5 - Tony Gwynn led all National League right fielders in defensive putouts three times (1984, 1986, 1990), assists two times (1984 & 1986), double plays two times (1984 & 1991), fielding percentage two times (1984 & 1986), and won five Gold Gloves (1986, 1987 & 1989-1991).

7 - Tony Gwynn won seven Silver Slugger Awards (1984, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1994, 1995, 1997) - the only outfielders with more are Barry Bonds & Manny Ramirez.

15 - Tony Gwynn was a National League All-Star from 1984 through 1987 then 1989 through 1999, fifteen times - the most by any San Diego Padres player in franchise history.

19 - Tony Gwynn wore #19 with the San Diego Padres and they retired his number in 2004, two years after they had inducted him into the Padres Hall of Fame.

97.61 - Tony Gwynn was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on January 9, 2007, receiving 532 out of 545 ballots (97.61%), seventh highest percentage in Hall of Fame voting history at the time, and just thirteen votes short of a unanimous selection.

307 - Tony Gwynn has a younger brother, Chris Gwynn, who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1987-1991), Kansas City Royals (1992-1993), Los Angeles Dodgers (1994-1995), and San Diego Padres (1996). They were the 307th set of brothers in Major League Baseball history.

1,135 - Tony Gwynn recorded his 1,135th hit on September 17, 1988, passing Dave Winfield as the all-time Padres hit leader.

2002 - Tony Gwynn was the only player inducted into the San Diego Padres Hall of Fame in 2002; joining inductees from 2001 (Buzzie Bavasi & Jerry Coleman), 2000 (Dave Winfield), and the inaugural class of 1999 (Nate Colbert, Randy Jones, Ray Kroc).

3,000 - Tony Gwynn joined the 3,000 Hits Club on August 6, 1999. He also had his 2,000th career hit on August 6th, back in 1993, and his mother, Vendella Gwynn was born on the 6th of August.

Petco Park opened on April 8, 2004, replacing Qualcomm Stadium as the home park of San Diego Padres. The stunning open-air ballpark is located at 19 Tony Gwynn Drive, San Diego, California. In 2007, a 9 1/2-foot, 1,200-pound bronze statue of Gwynn was unveiled just beyond Petco Park's outfield. A plaque on the front reads, "Tony Gwynn, Mr. Padre" and at the base, on the back, is a quote from his father, "If you work hard, good things will happen."
