"The big thing about Rich Hacker was that he was baseball through and through. He was one of the hardest workers I had ever seen. No matter what he did—you can't do more than 100 percent—he was always at 100 percent. Even when he was squirrel hunting, he was the same way." - Whitey Herzog in The Olean Times Herald (Rick Hummel, Former Cardinals coach Rich Hacker, a New Athens product like Herzog, dies at 72, 04/23/2020)

Rich Hacker Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Richard Warren Hacker was a Major League Baseball player with the Montreal Expos (1971). When Rich took the field on July 2, 1971, he became the second New Athens High School graduate to reach the majors. Do you know what Hall of Fame manager preceded him? [Answer]
Did you know that Rich Hacker was originally drafted out of high school, during the first-ever amateur baseball draft? Hacker was the 688th pick in the 1965 Baseball Draft, but did not sign with the Cardinals, choosing instead to play baseball at Southern Illinois University. Two years later, in the 1967 Draft, Hacker was selected by the Mets with the 182nd pick and signed his first contract.
Rich Hacker was on the 25-man roster for only four days, but appeared in six games (two doubleheaders)! He was sent back down to the minors because Bobby Wine, the starting shortstop, came off the disabled list and returned to the lineup. Hacker had 19 at-bats, all right-handed, but taught himself to switch-hit after being sent back down, in an effort to make himself more valuable to the team. When roster size expanded in September, Montreal called-up Hacker, who was now officially listed as a switch-hitter!
