Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"When I go out there, I'm doing whatever it takes to help my team win. If that means taking one off the face or jumping in front of a ball or hitting or getting hit with a pitch, I'll do it. That goes back to the way I was raised to win at all costs." - Mike Hampton in The New York Times (Jack Curry, 01/17/2000, 'Hampton Driven to Succeed by Father', Source)

Greg Maddux won the National League Gold Glove Award for Pitchers from 1990 through 2002, then 2004 through 2008. In 2003, Mike Hampton won the Gold Glove Award snapping the 13-year consecutive Mad Dog streak AND Hampton earned his fifth consecutive Silver Slugger Award becoming the first pitcher in Major League history to win a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger in the same season.

Mike Hampton was the first left-handed 20-game winner in franchise history for the Houston Astros. Larry Dierker (20-13 in 1969), J.R. Richard (20-15 in 1976), Joe Niekro (21-11 in 1979, 20-12 in 1980), Mike Scott (20-10 in 1989), and Jose Lima (21-10 in 1999) were all part of the Astros 20-wins club before Hampton went 22-4 in 1999 (a still-standing Astros record for wins in a season), but each of those twirlers were right-handed.

Did you know that Mike Hampton won five Silver Slugger Awards, the most by any pitcher in history? His seven home runs in 2001 were the most by any pitcher during a Silver Slugger Award winning season, his five were won consecutively, the most by any pitcher in history, and his sixteen runs batted in were tied for most by any pitcher (Don Robinson, in 1982, also had 16) during their award winning season.
