"I don't know. I'm stunned. I really am. You dream of throwing a no-hitter. The thought of a loss never crossed my mind. You expect to walk off that field and shake everybody's hand like you've seen a thousand times before." - Andy Hawkins in the Tyrone Daily Herald (UPI, 'Quotable", 07/02/1990, Page 4)

Andy Hawkins Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Andy Hawkins relieved Ed Whitson during Game 2 of the 1984 World Series, pitched 5.2 innings in relief, allowed only one hit, struck out three, and earned the win - the first (and thus far, the only) San Diego Padres pitcher to win a World Series Game (the Detroit Tigers won the Series 4-1).
1984 World Series | Game 2 TicketBaseball Almanac Research Library
On April 24, 1988, Andy Hawkins threw a complete game 1-hitter. Andy also had four complete game 3-hitters (May 10, 1983, June 5, 1984, July 1, 1988, July 13, 1989), all victories, two were shutouts, before he became the first New York Yankees pitcher to throw a losing no-hitter:
Andy Hawkins. July 1, 1990. Eight-Inning No-Hitter.
If ever a pitcher had a reason to be upset with his teammates it was New York Yankees right-hander Andy Hawkins.
The six-foot, three-inch, 220-pound native of Waco, Texas had a no-hit masterpiece against the Chicago White Sox before 30,642 at Comiskey Park. But he lost the game when the Yankees committed three errors with two outs in the eighth inning, providing the White Sox, first in the AL West, with four unearned runs.
Hawkins struck out three and walked five for the AL East's seventh-place Yankees, owners of the worst record in baseball. But his teammates managed just four hits, and got only three runners as far as second base off Chicago starter Greg Hibbard and relievers Barry Jones and Scott Radinsky.
The 30-year-old Hawkins, who had four seasons with wins in double figures for the San Diego Padres and Yankees, including 18 wins in 1985 but had a 1-4 record when he faced the ChiSox, retiring the first 14 White Sox in order before walking Ron Karkovice with two outs in the fifth. A passed ball by Bob Geren and another walk to Scott Fletcher gave Chicago a life, but Sammy Sosa flew out to left to end the inning.
Ivan Calderon walked leading off the seventh for the White Sox, but one out later was thrown out by Geren trying to steal second. Nothing further happened until two were out in the eighth. Then the roof caved in on Hawkins.
Karkovice and Fletcher both popped out to second to start the inning. Sosa then reached first on an error by third baseman Mike Blowers, who bobbled a grounder, then made a bad throw to first. Sosa stole second and went to third after walks to Ozzie Guillen and Lance Johnson. With the bases loaded, Jim Leyritz dropped Robin Ventura's drive to left, allowing all three base runners to score. Jesse Barfield then booted Calderon's fly to right with Ventura scoring the fourth and final run before Hawkins got Dan Pasqua on a pop out to short to end the inning.
When the Yankees went down in the top of the ninth, it was not necessary for the White Sox to bat again. Thus, Hawkin went down to defeat, despite pitching an eight-inning no-hitter.
The Yankees had few scoring opportunities. In the sixth, Geren singled and went to second on Alvaro Espinoza's one-out single. But Roberto Kelly popped out to first and Steve Sax struck out to end the threat.
Barfield singled with two outs in the seventh and moved to second on an infield single by Leyritz. The rally died as Blowers flew out to center. In the eighth, Geren reached first on Ventura's error, was sacrificed to second, but was stranded as Kelly struck out and Sax lined to short.
No-Hitter Historical Notes: On September 4, 1991 the Committee for Statistical Accuracy, appointed by Major League Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent, changed the definition of a no-hitter to require that a pitcher throw at least nine full innings and a complete game for the no-hitter to be official.
Since Andy Hawkins was pitching for the visiting New York Yankees, the White Sox never batted in the ninth inning and Hawkins lost the credit for what was once an official no-hitter.
Baseball Almanac, like other sources, once listed this gem on our American League No-Hitters page, but has since removed it and others affected by the rule. However, we also added two new sections to the no-hitters list to include removed games, American League No Hitters Broken Up in Extra Innings & American League No Hitters Less Than Nine Innings.

Butch Metzger won eleven consecutive games in a row, a team record for the San Diego Padres that began on September 22, 1975, and ended August 8, 1976 (Butch Metzger 1975 Game by Game Pitching Logs / Butch Metzger 1976 Game by Game Pitching Logs). In 1985, the record was tied by La Marr Hoyt (La Marr Hoyt 1985 Game by Game Pitching Logs) and Kevin Brown had matched that consecutive wins total as well in 1998 (Kevin Brown 1998 Game by Game Pitching Logs), but Andy Hawkins has the current team record for consecutive wins (12) by a Padres pitcher. Hawkins' streak began on September 19, 1984, and didn't end until he won 10 straight games to start the 1985 season (Andy Hawkins 1984 Game by Game Pitching Logs / Andy Hawkins 1985 Game by Game Pitching Logs).
