On July 9‚ 1944‚ the Pittsburgh Pirates knocked Head off the mound in two short innings and the big righty (who was actually a lefty growing up, but broke his arm and learned to pitch right-handed) left to serve in the United States Military. On April 23, 1946, Head returned to the mound for the first time since leaving and tossed a no-hitter (the sixth Brooklyn Dodger gem) at Ebbets Field versus the Boston Braves.
