Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"If the baseball gods are keeping score, (Todd) Helton will be the first player wearing a Rockies cap in Cooperstown. In this era of the asterisk, when a bleacher bum cannot be certain if the homer he just grabbed was the product of a juiced ball or a synthetic slugger, there are no doubts about Helton. Helton is a 100 percent pure, meat-and-potatoes, made-in-America athlete. He is the pride of the Rockies. The Colorado first baseman never cheats a paying customer. Loves winning, hates to talk about himself. His game is no brag, all bat." - Kiszla, Mark. Sports Writer. The Denver Post. 30 March 2004.

Todd Lynn Helton was a Major League Baseball player who spent his entire career with the Colorado Rockies (1997-2013). Todd received an athletic scholarship from the University of Tennessee to play both baseball and football. During his junior season (1994), Jerry Colquitt, the starting quarterback, was injured and Helton took over as starter. Three weeks later, Helton was injured and his replacement was a true freshman named Peyton Manning!

Did you know that Todd Helton, upon his retirement September 29, 2013, was the all-time Colorado Rockies leader in games played (2,247), at-bats (7,962), runs (1,401), hits (2,519), doubles (592), home runs (369), runs batted in (1,406), walks (1,335), intentional walks (185), extra base hits (998), sacrifice flies (93), plate appearances (9,453) and total bases (4,292) - just to name a few? Pictured below is the full page "Farewell" ad the five-time All-Star took out in the Denver Post, the day after he officially hung up his cleats:

Todd Helton spent his entire 17-year career with the Colorado Rockies and had his #17 retired during a 3-day celebration August 15-17, 2014, the first player in Rockies history to have a number retired (by the franchise). The "Retire #17 Weekend" occurred during a three-game series starting with the Reds at Coors Field, on August 15th, where the first 15,000 fans were issued a Farewell Bobblehead. On August 16th, the first 15,000 fans received a Todd Helton jersey. On August 17th, the first 15,000 fans received a Todd Helton Bobblehead Gnome (pictured below) and the official ceremony took place.

The first Major League player in history to have 35+ doubles for ten consecutive years (1999 through 2007) was Todd Helton. A few more notable highlights from his memorable career:

Todd Helton led all National League rookies (in 1998) in runs scored (78), hits (167) and on-base percentage (.380). Helton received finished second that year to Kerry Wood in the voting for National League Rookie of the Year.

Todd Helton hit for the cycle on June 19, 1999, the third by a Colorado Rockies player. That same year, Helton missed a second cycle by only a double on September 1st, a triple on August 30th, a home run on August 28th and a triple on July 22nd.

Todd Helton had a truly historic season in 2000, finishing first overall in the National League in batting average (.372), on base percentage (.463), slugging percentage (.698), hits (216), doubles (59) and runs batted in (147). He might not have led in every offensive stat, but he was the first senior circuit player to have at least 200 hits, 40 home runs, 100 RBI, 100 runs, 100 extra-base hits and 100 walks in one season. Those who came before him were all from the American Leauge: Babe Ruth (1921), Lou Gehrig (1927, 1930), Jimmie Foxx (1932) and Hank Greenberg (1937).

Todd Helton had 100+ extra base hits in 2000 (103) and 2001 (105) - the only player in Major League history with back-to-back instances. Two other players had 100+ extra base hit seasons twice in their career, Lou Gehrig in 1927 (117) & 1930 (100) and Chuck Klein in 1930 (107) & 1932 (103), but not consecutively.

Todd Helton finished with a .316 career batting average, 2,500+ hits, 550+ doubles and 350+ home runs. Exactly one other player can claim those same stats - Stan Musial.
