"Man, he (Livan Hernandez) works slow. I swear a gentleman sitting behind me read half of 'War and Peace' while he was out there. I looked back at one point, and he said '400 pages.'" - Stark, Jayson. ESPN Analyst. Rumblings and Grumblings. 27 May 2010.

Eisler Liván Hernández was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Florida Marlins (1996-1999), San Francisco Giants (1999-2002), Montreal Expos (2003-2004), Washington Nationals (20052006), Arizona Diamondbacks (2006-2007), Minnesota Twins (2008), Colorado Rockies (2008), New York Mets (2009), Washington Nationals (2009-2011), Atlanta Braves (2012), and Milwaukee Brewers (2012). When Livan was originally signed by the Marlins, on January 13, 1996, it was a guaranteed $4.5 million dollar contract, with $1.5 million in additional incentives, and a $2.5 million signing bonus — the most ever for an amateur baseball player at that point in baseball history!

Did you know that Livan Hernandez (1997) was the fifth player in Major League history to be named Most Valuable Player of both a League Championship Series and a World Series during the same season? The previous members of the "Postseason MVPx2 Club": Willie Stargell (1979), Darrell Porter (1982), Orel Hershiser (1988), and David Freese (2011).

Did you know Livan Hernandez was the first Montreal Expos pitcher to win a Silver Slugger Award (2004), and the last Montreal Expos pitcher to win a Silver Slugger Award (they moved to Washington the following season)?

Did you know Livan Hernandez stayed with the franchise during their move from one country to the other, making him the last Expos player to wear #26 and the first Nationals player to wear #26?

Livan Hernandez took the mound in Game 1 of the 1997 World Series and the media noted that he had only played in eighteen Major League games before that start - the fewest appearances by any former pitcher before a game one start in any World Series. However, Livan did have a few "big game experiences" (non-Major League Baseball) prior to that day, including a 1992 World Junior Championship, a 1993 World Junior Championship title with Cuba, followed by a gold medal win during the 1994 Baseball World Cup.

On October 2, 2004, the Montreal Expos defeated the New York Mets 6-3, the last win recorded by the Expos (they relocated and became the Washington Nationals in 2005). Livan Hernandez was the starting pitcher, leaving the fielding after seven solid innings, and a 3-2 lead, but the bullpen surrendered a game-tying run in the eighth. Montreal jumped ahead in the ninth, Chad Cordero received the final win, and Gary Majewski the final save.
