"The left-handed fireballer tossed two no-hitters as a professional, the first in 1939 against Charleston and the second in 1940 against Montreal. During one inning of an exhibition game against the Red Sox, he fanned feared Boston sluggers Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr and Jimmie Foxx.
