Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Every boy who grows up dreaming of playing Major League Baseball, has a similar vision of what it would be like, and what they would be like as a player. They would imagine that they were a great player. They would stake claim to being an All-Star, and playing in front of packed stadiums. They would imagine signing autographs, and would always treat the fans well, and that the fans would return the favor. There would be images of teammates that loved them and revered them. And, that when they became superstars, they would always remember that they were just a regular person, like everybody else, no better. They might even dream of making the Hall of Fame one day. Now, I may not have quite lived up to that dream, but I am proud to say I am friends and played with the guy who stayed true to every bit of it ... Trevor Hoffman." - Ausmus, Brad. Teammate. Opening up on Trevor Hoffman. Olney, Buster. ESPN Analyst. 12 January 2011.

Did you know that Trevor Hoffman was the first pitcher in Major League history to reach the 500-save milestone and the 600-save milestone? On June 6, 2007, Hoffman entered in the ninth inning, surrendered a lead off double to Nomar Garciaparra, then got Jeff Kent on a groundout to the shortstop, Luis Gonzalez on a groundout to second, and struck out Russell Martin for the third out and his 500th career save. On September 7, 2010, Hoffman entered in the ninth inning, surrendered a lead off single to Colby Rasmus, then got Randy Winn to ground into a double play, then Aaron Miles ground out for the third out and Hoffman had his 600th career save. On August 30, 2014, Hoffman was inducted into the San Diego Padres Hall of Fame, the plaque appears up above, and both milestones are mentioned there as well.

Did you know that Trevor Hoffman played shortstop at the University of Arizona and in the minor leagues (Billings Mustangs) he played sixty games at short in 1989? In 1990, he played another sixty-two games at short, forty-one games at third, and took the mound for the first time in his professional baseball career.

Did you know that Trevor Hoffman recorded two saves with the Florida Marlins (Save #1 | Save #2) and said of their closer Bryan Harvey, "For three months, I had a chance to watch him and he was real even keel and a had a lot of success." Traded midseason for Gary Sheffield, Hoffman went to San Diego and allowed three runs in his debut, eight runs over his his first three appearances, and blew his first save opportunity.

Did you know that Trevor Hoffman took over the San Diego Padres franchise record for career saves (109) on June 23, 1997, passing Rollie Fingers, after coming in with the bases loaded and striking out J.T. Snow (the only batter he faced in the game)?

Did you know that Trevor Hoffman recorded his forty-fifth save of the 1998 season on September 1, passing Mark Davis who held the San Diego Padres single season franchise record for saves (a year in which the writers awarded Davis with the Cy Young Award)?

Did you know that Trevor Hoffman recorded his fifty-third save in 1998 on September 27, tying the National League record (since broken by John Smoltz in 2002 and Eric Gagne in 2003) for saves in a season set by Randy Myers in 1993?

Did you know that Trevor Hoffman agreed to a four-year contract extension on March 8, 1999, worth $32 million, and in signing, Hoffy became the highest-paid reliever in baseball history (and the first Padre ever granted a no-trade clause)?

Trevor Hoffman holds the National League record for games saved in a career and is the San Diego Padres record holder for most saves (552), most saves in a season (53), most games pitched (902) and lowest earned run average (2.76)! Trevor Time was the Petco Park introduction used by the San Diego Padres which included his hallmark entrance music, Hells Bells by AC/DC (video above).
