Michael Joseph Hopkins was a Major League Baseball player who played catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1902). Did you know that Skinner, his nickname, appeared in exactly one Major League game and is featured on our Cups of Coffee page? Every ballplayer with a single cup of coffee is included and sortable columns make researching them as enjoyable as a real cup of coffee!
How did a Pennsylvania Railroad brakeman became a big leaguer? Mike Hopkins played semi-pro ball with the McCarthy's Baseball Team and lived in the Carnegie District (Pittsburgh). The Bucs were scheduled to play a Sunday doubleheader in Cincinnati and Jack O'Connor, one of the team's catchers, was not going to take the road trip. Honus Wagner also lived in the Carnegie area and arranged for Hopkins to join the team!
On August 24, 1902, Chief Zimmer caught game one of the doubleheader, then as planned, Hopkins caught game two. He went 2-for-2 at the plate, including a double, and finished his "career" with a 1.000 batting average, and a slugging percentage of 1.500!
Behind the plate, he had three putouts, an assist, and a passed ball. The National League end-of-season report listed no errors, but box scores from six different newspapers show he committed one (see sample below).
It might have only been one day, but Mike Hopkins is officially a Major League Baseball catcher in the Baseball Almanac.
