Did you know that Frank Howard was an All-American in both basketball and baseball at Ohio State, and was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors of the NBA? Here are a few other notable accomplishments for the 1960 National League Rookie of the Year:

1968 Slugging Percentage Leader. Finished in the top ten five additional times.

1968 and 1969 Total Bases Leader. Finished in the top ten three additional times.

1968 and 1970 Home Runs Leader. Finished in the top ten seven additional times.

1970 Runs Batted In Leader. Finished in the top ten five additional times.

1970 Bases on Balls Leader. 1970 & 1971 Intentional Bases on Balls Leader.

"The Washington Monument" and "The Capital Punisher" are classic nicknames given to him during his tenure with the Washington Senators (1965-1971). His first nickname, Hondo, was given to him though by his teammates in 1958 after the John Wayne film of the same name.

Frank Howard RFK Stadium White Seat

Frank Howard RFK Stadium White Seat

Several seats at RFK Stadium were painted white to denote where mammoth home runs by Frank Howard landed. Some of these seats were found in the upper bowl in Section 536, Row 5, Seat 17, (see image up above) Section 538, Row 4, Seat 19, and in Section 542, Row 3, Seat 3. When Ted Williams came to manage the club in '69, Howard gave up his #9, switched to #33, and the Splendid Splinter once said of the white seats, "See all those white seats up there. Those are where Frank hit 'em. The yellow ones are for the times he struck out."
