Did you know that Joe Jackson was named one of the 100 Greatest Cleveland Indians Players ever? As part of the club’s 100th Anniversary Celebration in 2001, a panel of veteran baseball writers, historians and executives selected a roster of the Top 100 Greatest Indians and Jackson was named one of the twenty-three outfielders.

In 2002, Baseball Almanac acquired the courtroom testimony of Joe Jackson and added it to the site. Here is a brief excerpt from that Shoeless Joe Jackson Courtroom Testimony page:

Attorney: Did anybody pay you any money to help throw that series in favor of Cincinnati?

Shoeless Joe Jackson: They did.

Attorney: How much did they pay?

Shoeless Joe Jackson: They promised me $20,000 and paid me five.

Attorney: Who promised you the twenty thousand?

Shoeless Joe Jackson: "Chick" Gandil.

Attorney: Who is Chick Gandil?

Shoeless Joe Jackson: He was their first baseman on the White Sox club.

Attorney: Who paid you the $5,000?

Shoeless Joe Jackson: Lefty Williams brought it in my room and threw it down.

Attorney: Who is Lefty Williams?

Shoeless Joe Jackson: The pitcher on the White Sox club.

Knowing this, and hopefully you had an opportunity to read the entire transcript as this is a very brief segment (and far from the whole story), do you enshrine Joe Jackson in the National Baseball Hall of Fame? Share your opinion with us today on Baseball Fever.

Joe Jackson

Joe Jackson | Helmar Big League Brea (#42)

An April 29, 1911, issue of The Sporting Life had the following quote, "Cleveland fans don't think Joe is as good as Ty Cobb. They are of the unanimous opinion that he is better than the Tigers star." Ty Cobb did finish his career with the highest batting average in Major League history (Top 1,000), but Joe Jackson wasn't too far behind - finishing with the third highest batting average in baseball history. Perhaps had his bat, Black Betsy (pictured below), been able to complete its career we would have found out which fans were correct.
