Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"As much the defining image for an Era as Hank and his lumberjack liners, Pat Jarvis, toppling to the left side of the Atlanta mound, after another ferocious effort at a fastball—Pat, for several years the Opening Day hurler, when all that stood between victory and certain defeat was the will of the Little Bulldog. Built like a pre school lineman, Jarvis worked as fiercely, as boldly as a gladiator." - Peeler, Tim. Author. Waiting for Godot's First Pitch: More Poems from Baseball. McFarland Publishing. 17 July 2001. Page 74.

Robert Patrick Jarvis was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Atlanta Braves (1966-1972) and Montreal Expos (1973). When Pat, his nickname, made his big league debut on August 4, 1966, he became the first Carlyle High School graduate to play in the majors!

Pat told Baseball Almanac during an interview on the 40th anniversary of his first game, "At Carlyle, I played baseball, basketball, and track. I really loved playing sports and I got a partial scholarship to play baseball at Murray. Fate got me to the majors because a scout was there to see our starting pitcher, who got sick or something, and I was next in the rotation. The following years, I was pitching in the Appalachian League!"

On September 11, 1966, Pat Jarvis won his fourth major league game. One of the opposing pitchers that day making his big league debut rung up Jarvis for his first career strikeout. That rookie twirler was named Nolan Ryan, who would go on to become the all-time career strikeout leader in Major League Baseball history!
