Jackie Jensen was born on Wednesday, March 9, 1927, in San Francisco, California. Jensen was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 18, 1950, with the New York Yankees. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Jackie Jensen baseball stats page.
"There is no question I was looking for an excuse to leave the ball club and I know the fear was related to the insecurity of my first marriage. I wanted to go home, but I loved baseball. I got terribly down on myself. I could think about it rationally, ask myself why I couldn't beat this thing. 'You don't have to like flying,' I'd say to myself. 'A lot of people don't but they still fly.' But when the time came, I just couldn't make myself do it. I was using Arthur (Ellen, a Las Vegans nightclub hypnotist) as a crutch. He's no miracle worker, but he could help me relax. Still, he couldn't make me more than I was. I came to resent myself for behaving in such an infantile way. I know I had another four years that I could've played. The way I was driving in runs, I could have set some records. My only regret is that now I can't hope to be considered for the Hall of Fame." - Jackie Jensen in Sports Illustrated (Ron Fimrite, 04/12/1976, A Fear of Flying, Source)

Jackie Jensen Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Did you know that Jackie Jensen is the only athlete to ever play in the Rose Bowl, a World Series, and an All-Star Game? Not counting the latter two, the closest player to match this feat was Chuck Essegian, who played in the Rose Bowl and a World Series.
Norman Rockwell, The Rookie, Saturday Evening Post
Frank Sullivan, Sammy White, and Jackie Jensen were told on an off-day to drive to Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Frank recalled, "When we got there we were greeted warmly by a small, slim man, whose name meant nothing to me. He posed us and took a number of pictures, explaining that the background would be the locker room we used in Sarasota, Florida, for Spring Training. I remember ragging on Jackie Jensen on the way back, saying the trip was all his idea, and the photographer didn't seem to know what he was doing. The following March, I pick up The Saturday Evening Post (pictured above), and there we were on the cover. The man was an illustrator, not a photographer, and if you look closely, you'll see we are wearing street shoes, not spikes. The cover was titled The Rookie and the man's name turned out to be Norman Rockwell." The rookie was actually Sherman Safford, a high school athlete from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, who was asked to model for the painting which was based on Mickey McDermott making the Red Sox roster back during the spring of 1948.
Jackie Jensen had a World Series ring (1950), a stolen base title (1954), was a three-time RBI Champion (1955, 1958, 1959), who was also voted the Most Valuable Player in the entire American League (1958), as well as a Gold Glove (1959), but his baseball career ended prematurely due in part to an intense fear of flying.
