"FABIAN KOWALIK: Began his professional playing in his native state, Texas; he worked through Minor League teams, had a try-out with the White Sox, who turned him over to Buffalo to have the rough edges polished off. His 18 wins for that season made him desirable to the Cubs who wanted more pitching talent on their staff." - Overland Candy Baseball Wrapper (1938, #R301, Fabian Kowalik)

Did you know that the Cubs chose Kowalik in the Rule 5 Draft in 1935, after he was given a high recommendation from Hall of Fame catcher Ray Schalk? Later that same year, Fabian appeared in the 1935 World Series (Game 2), struck Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg (who homered in the first) with a pitch, and Jo-Jo White in the head during a fielding play. Some sources say Fabian broke Greenberg's wrist, but several newspapers reported that Hank hurt his hand while sliding into home plate (below), and the x-rays taken that night showed no broken bones.

Fabian Kowalik Trivia: He obviously had a unique last name, but his first name was also "rare" -- he was the first major leaguer named Fabian! Do you know who was second? [Answer]
