Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"What we're trying to do here is make chicken salad out of chicken shit," proclaimed manager Joe Kuhel, in an eloquent pronouncement on what he thought the 1949 season might yield for supporters of the Senators. Following a bad start, the club hit the road and enjoyed great success on a western swing. When the Nats' train pulled into Washington, the players were met at the station by a crowd of 5,000 people." - Deveaux, Tom. Author. The Washington Senators, 1901-1971. McFarland Publishing. 1 August 2005. Page 174.

Joseph Anthony Kuhel was a Major League Baseball player with the Washington Senators (19301937), Chicago White Sox (1938-1943), Washington Senators (1944-1946), and Chicago White Sox (1946-1947). Did you know that Joe, his nickname, hit the only home run for the 1945 Washington Senators in Griffith Stadium (their home park)? Six visiting players went deep that year in the cavernous confines, but Kuhel was the only Senator with a home run that entire year and it was an inside-the-park homer hit during the third inning off Bob Muncrief of the 1945 St. Louis Browns on September 7, 1945.
