Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"If you hit the ball hard, you've done your job. What happens after that is beyond your control. This game is fixed on results, but if you focus on statistics, you can lose your confidence and create a slump in your mind." - Lee, Travis. Post Game Press Conference. Pac Bell Park. 14 April 2000.

Travis Reynolds Lee was a Major League Baseball player with the Arizona Diamondbacks (1998-2000), Philadelphia Phillies (20002002), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2003, 2005-2006), and New York Yankees (2004). Did you know that Travis played baseball as a lefty, and quarterback on the football team as a righty, when he was at Capital High School (Olympia, Washington)?

After graduating from Capital High School, Travis accepted a scholarship to play baseball at San Diego State University, where he won the Golden Spikes Award (1996), given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the country! That same year, Lee was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 1st round — the 2nd pick overall. Travis did not get sent to the minor leagues, but instead played on the 1996 Olympic Baseball Team for the United States. The U.S. team (7-2) lost to Cuba in the preliminary round, and Japan in the semifinals, but won the Bronze medal by defeating Nicaragua.

The Twins signing bonus was $1.8 million, but Travis Lee received $10 million from the Diamondbacks. How did that happen? Rule 4(E) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement stated that all teams must send formal, written contract offers to draftees within 15 days of their selection. The paperwork was not completed on time and Lee was declared a free agent, along with three other players. Twenty-one teams showed interest, thirteen of them made an offer, and Travis signed with Arizona, the first "free-agent" signing in Diamondbacks history, and the face of a brand-new franchise!

On March 31, 1998, Travis Lee made his major league debut. During his first at-bat, in the second inning, facing off against Darryl Kile, Lee hit a hard grounder between the shortstop and second baseman, a clean single. In the bottom of the fourth, Lee singled again, during his second career at-bat. Then, in the sixth, Lee swung at the first pitch thrown by Kile and homered over the right field wall, his first career home run.

Every one of those hits was historic, not just for Travis Lee, but because it was the first regular season game in Arizona Diamondbacks franchise history! Lee's single in the second, the first hit in Dbacks history. Lee's single in the fourth, the first Dbacks player with a multi-hit game. Lee's homer in the sixth, the first home run hit in franchise history!

Travis Lee was also the first Arizona Diamondbacks player to wear #16 in a game, their first ever first baseman in history, and his solo homer drove in the first run scored and credited him with the first RBI!

He homered 115 times, off 99 different pitchers, in 26 different ballparks. One more notable home run took place on April 3, 2006, an Opening Day dinger off Rodrigo Lopez, which ultimately made Travis the first Major League player in baseball history with a home run in Opening Day games in BOTH his first and last big league seasons!
