"When I caught that ball, I thought a train hit me. You know, I tagged him and he plowed into me and knocked me over on my back and everything. And I got up and I said, 'Hey, Joe (DiMaggio), what's going on here?' He didn't say. He just brushed his pants off and ran over in the dugout. And I thought, well, if that's the way he plays ball, you've got to be careful when he gets on base." - Dario Lodigiani in the San Francisco Chronicle (Tom FitzGerald, 02/13/2008)

Dario Lodigiani Stats by Baseball Almanac |
What did Lodigiani think of the Major Leagues after his career? In Baseball Digest, 'What Some Old-Timers Think of the Major Leagues Today' (November 1995, Rick Van Blair, Page 53) he said, "You'll never see another .400 hitter again because the pitching is too good now. A hitter can't figure a starter out anymore because if he gets into trouble, bingo, he's out of there and a fresh pitcher is called in. Now they have middle relief, long relief, and stoppers. To hit .350 today, a batters has to be a damn magician. The talent is there but it's thinned out because of all the teams they have today. Teams were close in my day but not today with flying to the different cities. That closeness is gone now."
