Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Initially, it (winning the 1967 American League Pennant) was what you would dream about in Little League. The winning pitcher, being on the mound to win the pennant, everyone congratulating me. But a few minutes later, you realize you're not going where you want to go. I was trying to get back in the dugout. Thank God for the Boston police, they were able to control the crowd. It was delirium." - Lonborg, Jim. Where've you gone, Jim Lonborg? Browne, Ian. MLB Staff Writer. 24 June 2002.

Did you know that Jim Lonborg was a pre-med student (future Dentist / Tufts University School of Dental Medicine) who received a degree in biology from Stanford before being signed by the Boston Red Sox? Did you know Gentleman Jim was the first Cy Young Award winner (1967) in BoSox history?

What happened after going 22-9 in 1967? In December of that year, Lonborg tore the ligaments in his left knee while skiing and his pitching career thereafter was marked by several nagging injuries. He won only 27 games from 1968 to 1971 and was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers after the 1971 season. While he performed well for Milwaukee in 1972, the team traded him in October to the Philadelphia Phillies. He spent the next six and a half seasons with Philadelphia before his release midway through the 1979 season. 15-years on the mound, a 157-137 record with 1,475 strikeouts, a 3.86 ERA, 90 complete games, 15 shutouts, and 2464.1 innings pitched - how did he celebrate his retirement? By going back to college (Tufts University) and completing dental school, an amazing journey from recording the final out of the 1967 Impossible Dream season to being a doctor! Jim shared how that happened to sportswriter Ian Brown, Where've you gone, Jim Lonborg, on June 24, 2002:

"I was blessed to be a Major League ballplayer for 15 years and to come into a beautiful career like dentistry. It's hard to compare. The life of a dentist is a little more realistic, a little more grounded. I've enjoyed my patients and their families, and providing service to them. A lot of people take it for granted but I take it very seriously.

"I was a pre-med student at Stanford, and I was always interested in healthcare, always interested in taking care of people and their needs.

"When I got out of baseball, my wife and I took a vacation, and during the, 'What am I going to do for the rest of my life' conversations, she said, 'Why don't you become a dentist? You have control of your life. It's not like being a doctor where you're fully committed 24 hours a day, seven days a week'. The more we talked about it, the more sense it made. I went to UMass-Boston for one year, and got my act together academically again, and went to Tufts Dental School and went straight through for three years."

Gentleman Jim was the ace of the 1967 Boston Red Sox team, often referred to as the "Impossible Dream" team / season, and during that year Jim led the American League in wins (22 / Longborg's only 20-win season), strikeouts (246, the third Red Sox strikeout champion in team history, behind Cy Young [158 in 1901] & Tex Hughson [113 in 1942]), games started (39), and hit batsmen (19).
