Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I still think Javy's underrated. He's the total package. You can count total package catchers on one hand. He's one of them. He's everything you want in a baseball catcher. He plays hard, gives you everything he's got. And he's tough." - Former Braves Coach Ned Yost (Samantha Carr, National Baseball Hall of Fame, 12/13/2011, 'Sweet-Swinging Backstop', Source)

Did you know that Javy Lopez holds the Major League record for home runs in a season by a catcher? In 1953, Roy Campanella became the first catcher to hit forty home runs in a season and held the record until 1996, when Todd Hundley hit forty-one. A 43-year-old record fell only to be broken again in 2003, when Javy set the new plateau at forty-two.

Did you know that on our Home Run Records in a Single Season page you can see not only Javy Lopez's record, but a list of every single catcher who has ever reach the 30 home runs in a season plateau?

Did you know that Javy Lopez was the catcher behind the plate when Kent Mercker threw his no-hitter on April 8, 1994?

Javy Lopez Book | Behind the Plate: A Catcher's View of the Braves Dynasty

On May 23, 2014, Javy Lopez - who has hit more home runs than any catcher in Braves history - was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame (Link). That year he was enshrined alongside Rabbit Maranville and Dave Pursley (team scout). Javy said, "I mean, my dream as a kid was to play professional baseball in the future, and my dream came true. And being inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Atlanta Braves, that's completely unexpected, and for me, that's a great honor and definitely a bonus. I thought my goal was completed, and having this is even better."

"For all the wins I got at the Major League level, Javy certainly had his hand in a lot of them -- both from an offensive standpoint and from a defensive standpoint. I'll never forget the instrumental play in the 1995 World Series Game 2, when he threw Manny Ramirez out at first base -- big, big play picking Manny off. It certainly went a long way toward us not only winning that game, but the Series." - Tom Glavine

"He was the first guy I was actually in the clubhouse when they got the call to the big leagues. I'm sitting here looking at the guy and thinking, 'OK, that's what a Major League body should look like.' I was thinking, 'I've got a ways to go.'" - Chipper Jones

The 2003 Atlanta Braves had 3 players win Silver Slugger Awards - the most they ever had as a franchise in a single season. Mike Hampton (pitcher), Gary Sheffield (outfield) and Javy Lopez (catcher) each captured a silver bat and the win by Lopez, was their first ever for a catcher.
