Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"That (winning Game 4 of the 2004 World Series) was classic Derek (Lowe). He's not orthodox about the way he does things, but there is no doubt about the ability he has and the size of his heart." - Timlin, Mike. Boston Red Sox Relief Pitcher. Post Game Press Conference. 28 October 2004.

Did you know that only eighteen pitchers in Major League Baseball history have earned a win against all thirty Major League teams? Sportswriter AJ Cassavell once wrote, "Beating one Major League team figures to be difficult enough for a starting pitcher. Beating all 30 of them, however, is nothing short of pitching history." We agree and are pleased to present the I've Beaten Every Major League Team "club" that includes these 18 twirlers: Kevin Brown, A.J. Burnett, Bartolo Colon, Dan Haren, Tim Hudson, Randy Johnson, John Lackey, Al Leiter (who started the "club"), Kyle Lohse, Derek Lowe, Jamie Moyer, Terry Mulholland, Vicente Padilla, Max Scherzer, Curt Schilling, Javier Vazquez, Woody Williams and Barry Zito.

In 2006, Derek Lowe won sixteen games and finished the season leading the National League (along with Aaron Harang, Brad Penny, John Smoltz, Brandon Webb and Carlos Zambrano) in games won. [Top 25]

Derek Lowe and Aaron Harang each pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006. Their tie for league leader in games won was the first time two Los Angeles Dodgers led the senior circuit in games won, and only the second instance in franchise history - joining Kirby Higbe and Whit Wyatt who won twenty-two each in 1941, with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The six-way tie for league leader in games won was the most ever in National League history, two ahead of the four pitchers who led the league with twenty-wins each in 1926; the league leading aces that season were Pete Donohue, Ray Kremer, Lee Meadows, and Flint Rhem.

Derek Lowe was the third Boston Red Sox pitcher (Jeff Reardon, 40 saves, 1999 & Tom Gordon, 46 saves, 1998) to save at least forty games in a season when he finished the 2000 season with 42 saves. Two years later he won twenty-games, the forty-fourth 20-win season by a Red Sox pitcher, but the first – and to date only – by one with a 40-save season. That same year, on April 27, 2002, Derek Lowe recorded his fourth win of the month in style, no-hitting the Tampa Bay Devil Rays - the first time the Rays were held hitless.
