"I've always been a focused person, and I continue to remain focused on my baseball career, but I think the cancer made me realize that there are other things that are a notch above baseball, you know? The whole ordeal put family, friends, my health where they should be in terms of priorities. Not that they weren't before, but I don't think I was as aware of it prior to this ordeal." - Mike Lowell in FIU Magazine (July 2002)

Mike Lowell Stats by Baseball Almanac |
In 1996, Gary Sheffield became the first player in Marlins history to win a Silver Slugger Award. In 2003, Mike Lowell won a Silver Slugger, the first infielder to win in franchise history (Sheff won as an outfielder / Lowell won at third base).
In 2005, Mike Lowell led the National League in fielding percentage (.983) and double plays turned by a third bagger (34). Lowell was awarded with his first and only Gold Glove Award at third base -- which also made Mike the first (and to date, the only) third base Gold Glove Award winning Marlins player.
In 2007, on April 22nd, Manny Ramirez hit a home run off Chase Wright in the third inning. J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek then went deep, in consecutive order, off Wright also, tying the record for most consecutive home runs in any inning by an American League team.
Did you know that amongst third basemen who have played at least 1,000 games at third, Brooks Robinson holds the American League record for highest fielding average (.971), Ken Reitz holds the National League record for highest fielding average (.970), and Mike Lowell holds the Major League record for highest fielding average (.974)? Lowell split his 1,474 games played at third base between the two leagues (964 in the N.L. / 510 in the A.L.).
Mike Lowell | The Hidden Ball Trick | August 10, 2005
The hidden ball trick is rarely attempted and rarely succeeds. Especially not at the Major League level. The trick play basically occurs when an infielder pretends that the ball has been returned to the pitcher, but it is in their glove instead, allowing them to tag the baserunner when they begin to take their lead. Mike Lowell has successfully turned the hidden ball trick twice during his career, catching Luis Terrero in 2005 & Brian Schneider in 2004.
