"I always kind of liked to be the second-best player on a team. In some ways, I'd almost rather sit behind another All-Star and do my deal and be an All-Star with him and set records and do whatever, never be the Deion Sanders (Maas' teammate on the New York Yankees during his 1990 rookie campaign). I would have loved to hid behind Deion, been an All-Star and let Deion get all the press. But in New York, it didn't happen that way. I ended up having all the press and while it was okay and it was great, I don't think I really needed it to feel good about things." - Kevin Maas in Where Have All Our Yankees Gone? (Brian Jensen, Taylor Trade Publishing, 03/29/2004, Page 160)

Kevin Maas Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Kevin Christian Maas was a Major League Baseball player with the New York Yankees (1990-1993) and Minnesota Twins (1995). After getting called-up from the Columbus Clippers in 1990, Kevin hit twenty-one home runs in only seventy-nine games, finishing second in The Sporting News Rookie Player of the Year Award voting to Sandy Alomar, Jr.!
Don Mattingly, the regular (six-time All-Star) first baseman for the Bronx Bombers, was on the injured list, dealing with degenerated disks in his back, prompting the Yanks to give Maas an opportunity in 1990. Kevin hit his ninth and tenth career home run in a game on August 2, 1990, then after a game on August 6th, the New York Times wrote:
Maas, the rookie first baseman who began the day having collected 10 home runs faster than anyone in major league baseball history, hurried his 11th out of the ball park with one out in the seventh inning yesterday to lift the Yankees to a 2-1 triumph over the Cleveland Indians at the Stadium.
'A hanging breaking ball,' Maas said when asked what pitch of Greg Swindell's he hit. 'A slider, a curve, I don't know. It was spinning.'
The ball was nothing short of hurtling an instant later, crunched via a giant arc well into the upper deck in right field. "I'm trying to keep things in perspective," said the 25-year-old Maas, who was called up from the minors and has 11 home runs in 93 times at bat. "A player who hits a home run every nine at-bats is not what I am. But I know what people will begin to expect. All I can do is keep them excited."
Did you know that Kevin Maas was the first player in big league history to hit 20-or-more home runs in a season (1990), where ALL of them were hit after the first of July? Do you know what player next duplicated this feat in 2009? [Answer]
