Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"During my 18 years I came to bat almost 10,000 times. I struck out about 1,700 times and walked maybe 1,800 times. You figure a ballplayer will average about 500 at-bats a season. That means I played seven years without ever hitting the ball." - Mantle, Mickey. Mickey Mantle — Memories and Memorabilia. Canale, Larry. Author. Krause Publications. 20 June 2011, Page 150. Mickey Charles Mantle was a Major League Baseball player who spent his entire 18-year career playing for the New York Yankees (1951-1968). Did you know that when Mick, his nickname, made his big league debut on April 17, 1951, he became the first Commerce High School (Commerce, Oklahoma) graduate to play in the majors? Too easy? Did you know that Mickey Mantle once said, "Hitting the ball was easy. Running around the bases was the hard part?" However, even "Muscles" once had a brief slump early in his career which was described in Bartlett's Book of Anecdotes (Fadiman, Clifton. Author. Little, Brown & Company. 1 September 2000. Page 369):

The son of a miner from Oklahoma, Mantle was led to baseball at an early age by his father. But he struggled with the Yankees and was sent down to their farm team in Kansas City, where he went 0 for 22 in a strong slump. He called his father saying, "I don't think I can play baseball anymore." The next day his father appearead unannounced in Mantle's hotel room and started packing a suitcase, jamming Mantle's clothes into it. Asked what he was doing, Mantle's father told him, "Your're going home. You're going to work in the mines, that's what we'll do. You can work back down there." Shocked, Mantle bounced back out of his slump, hitting .360 for Kansas City and returning to the Yankees. Looking back years later, he said, "That was the turning point of my life."

On May 14, 1967, Mickey Mantle hit career home run number 500 and became the first switch-hitter to join the 500 Home Runs Club. Join Baseball Almanac as we take a look at some additional numbers of interest as they relate to the most prolific switch hitter in baseball history:

.421 - Mickey Mantle finished his career with a .421 on-base percentage, the Major League record for highest on-base percentage by a switch hitter in a career. In 1957, Mantle had a career high .521 OBP, the Major League record for highest on-base percentage by a switch hitter in a single season.

.557 - Mickey Mantle finished his career with a .557 slugging average, the Major League record for highest slugging average by a switch hitter in a career. In 1956, Mantle had a career high .705 slugging average, the Major League record for highest slugging average by a switch hitter in a single season.

1 - Mickey Mantle hit the first home run in the Astrodome on April 9, 1965, crushing a Turk Farrell fastball over the 406-feet sign in center field; however, that was actually an exhibition game, and did not spastically count. Do you remember what player hit the first regular season / official home run (April 12, 1965) in the Astrodome? [Answer]

3 - Mickey Mantle was not just incredibly strong, but he was also incredibly fast. In 1958, The Mick hit an inside the park home run on May 9, 1958, another on May 20, 1958, and a third on June 5, 1958. Not one Yankee player since Mantle, has hit three inside the park home runs in the same season! One Yankee, in 2018, collected two inside the parkers — do you remember who it was? [Answer]

7 - Mickey Mantle wore #6 when he made his big league debut with the Bronx Bombers, changed to #7, and on Mickey Mantle Day, at Yankee Stadium, June 8, 1969, The Mick's #7 was retired and he was a given a bronze plaque to be hung on the center field wall near the monuments to Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Miller Huggins. After its presentation by Joe DiMaggio, Mantle gave a similar plaque to DiMaggio, telling the crowd, "Joe DiMaggio's deserves to be higher." In response, Joltin Joe's plaque was hung one inch higher than Mantle's.

12 - Mickey Mantle is often associated with home runs, but on July 23, 1957, he showed his ability to hit singles, doubles, triples and home runs, completing the twelfth cycle in franchise history for the New York Yankees. Also, twelve of Mantle's 536 career regular season home runs were walk-offs, tying Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, and Stan Musial. Frank Robinson tied them next, but all four were passed in 2012, when a player became the first with thirteen walk-offs. Do you remember who it was? [Answer]

20 - Mickey Mantle played in the majors for eighteen years, and was not sent to the Midsummer Classic in 1951, or 1966, yet he did appear in twenty All-Star Games! How is that possible? From 1959 through 1962, two All-Star Games were played each of those years, and The Commerce Comet was sent to all eight of those Midsummer Classics!

52 - Mickey Mantle hit 52 home runs in 1956, a total that led every hitter from both leagues. His .353 batting average and 130 RBIs also led both leagues and The Mick became the second Bronx Bomber to win the Triple Crown (Lou Gehrig won it first in 1934), the first and only switch-hitter to win a Triple Crown, and he won the first of three Most Valuable Player Awards — this one was unanimous, the first time any Bronx Bomber won it unanimously (and still the only instance by a Yankee).

54 - Mickey Mantle hit 54 home runs in 1961, the Major League record for most home runs in a single season by a switch-hitter. Thirty, of the fifty-four, were hit on the road, which is also in the record books for most home runs in a single season hit on the road by a switch hitter.

91 - Mickey Mantle was the ninety-first ballplayer from the state of Oklahoma. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974, Mantle was the third player from Oklahoma sent to Cooperstown! Do you know who preceded him in 1952? [Answer] Or 1967? [Answer]

110.2 - Mickey Mantle finished his career with a Wins Above Replacement (WAR) of 110.2. the highest in baseball history by a switch hitting position player. The next closest switch hitter had a career WAR of 85.3. Do you know who it is? [Answer]

146 - Mickey Mantle was walked 146 times in 1957, the most bases on balls awarded a switch-hitter during a single season in Major League history. Mantle's career total, 1733 walks, are also still a Major League record for most bases on balls by a switch hitter.

376 - Mickey Mantle had a league leading 376 total bases in 1956, setting the American League (and Major League) record for most total bases in a season by a switch hitter.

901 - Mickey Mantle appears on page 901, in one of favorite baseball books of all time (The Cultural Encyclopedia of Baseball), in a section called Strongest Players. A quote there says, "No man in the history of baseball had as much power as Mickey Mantle. No man. You're not talking about ordinary power. Dave Kingman has power. Willie Mays had power. Then when you're talking about Mickey Mantle — it's an altogether different level. Separates the men from the boys." Do you know who said this quote about Mickey Mantle? [Answer]

2017 - Mickey Mantle passed away in 1995, prompting Topps Baseball Cards to "retire" #7 in their base card sets (excluding inserts). No player, except Mantle himself, was featured in a regular set on card number seven until the release of the 2017 Topps Baseball Card set. Topps said in a Press Release, "After more than twenty years, we wanted to offer the spot of card number seven to a young, emerging star, but we also wanted it to still be a New York Yankee. He is bringing that magic and mystique back to the team, and was a natural fit for card number seven." Who did Topps select? [Answer]

2,401 - Mickey Mantle wore pinstripes in 2,401 games, the franchise record for games played as a New York Yankee. On August 28, 2011, Derek Jeter passed The Mick and finished his career the new all-time leader with 2,747 regular season games played — the most in New York Yankees' history.
