Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"My family was athletic. I was one of a group of brothers, all ball players. My eyes were always good. I have been careful to avoid eye strain. I do not read much, particularly in the evening. No one ever gained a batting championship without confidence in his ability to hit. Anybody who beats out the field, no matter how lucky he may be, must be hitting about right. There's a fine edge to your work that you can feel, but can't describe." - Heinie Manush in The Hall: A Celebration of Baseball's Greats: In Stories and Images, the Complete Roster of Inductees (National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Little, Brown and Company. 05-06-2014)

Heinie Manush Hall of Fame Plaque

Did you know that when Heinie Manush won the batting title in 1926, he was the second left-handed hitting Detroit Tigers player to led the American League in batting average? Do you recall what fellow Hall of Famer came before Manush? [Answer]

Heinie Manush had a .378 batting average the year he won his batting championship, tops in the American League (Top 25) AND National League (Top 25). The runner-up in the junior circuit "only" hit .372, but also led the league in base on balls, home runs, on base percentage, RBIs, runs scored, slugging average, total bases, and triples.

Heinie Manush was actually in second place on the last day of the season, but went 6-for-9 in a doubleheader (Game 1 | Game 2), overtaking and denying the Triple Crown to a hall of famer named Babe Ruth.
