Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"After the Braves' 1914 World Series victory, (George) Stallings said Maranville was 'the greatest player to come to the majors since Ty Cobb.' Though that statement proved to be a bit much, Rabbit was one of the game's most highly regarded players in his era... Make no mistake, Rabbit was one of the greatest defensive infielders of all time." - Author Gary Caruso in Braves Encyclopedia (Temple University Press, 10/25/1995, Maranville, Rabbit, Page 208)

Walter James Vincent Maranville was a Major League Baseball player for the Boston Braves (1912-1920, 1929-1933, 1935), Pittsburgh Pirates (1921-1924), Chicago Cubs (1925), Brooklyn Robins (1926), and St. Louis Cardinals (1927-1928). Rabbit, his nickname, played in 23 seasons, the most in baseball history, until 1986! Who broke his record? [Answer]

Did you know that Rabbit Maranville finished his career with 10,078 at-bats, just the fourth player (at that time) in Major League Baseball history to reach that plateau, joining Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and Tris Speaker? [Top 1,000 At-Bats in Baseball History]

Did you know that Bill James ranked Rabbit Maranville as the 39th greatest shortstop in baseball history? In The New Bill James Historical Abstract (Page 615), James shared this in Rabbit's biography, "Maranville's norma, regular way of catching a popup was the 'vest pocket catch.' Holding his glove open at his belly button, he would let the ball strike him in the chest and roll down his shirt into the glove. He was, in short, a piece of work. He made a mockery of the game, and he was so good that he got by with it. You and I will never see the like of him."

The best biography we have seen for Rabbit Maranville, appeared in The Funniest Baseball Book Ever (Peter Handrinos, Andrews McMeel Publishing, 04/06/2010, Page 105). An excerpt:

Walter "Rabbit" Maranville had a great sense of humor. And boy did he need it.

At barely over 5'5" and 150 pounds, Rabbit was among the smallest shortstops of the twentieth century, the one who always seemed to attract opponent intimidation tactics such as bean-balls, take-out slides, and hard tags. In the early, extremely rough era stretching from the 1910s to the 1930s, each and every ball game was liable to bring him bumps and bruises, stiffness and soreness, spasms and sprains, and tweaks and tenderness, all livened up by the occasional small tear and crack.

For all that, though, nothing could keep Rabbit down. He not only survived, but thrived, lasting a record 23 years at short while crafting a Hall of Fame career. The runt everyone tried to knock off ended up among the most resilient and winning ballplayers of his era.

Lightning-fast reflexes, quick feet, and hard work could account for a lot of Rabbit Maranville's longevity but, beyond that, the little guy had far too much fun to quit. It turned that that, as much as needed some comic relief, he could come up with plenty of it.

The most public part of Maranville's daring was in his anything-goes attitude toward the game. When he was on base, he had a habit of, quite literally, dancing off the bases, breaking into little step routines that worked to both distract the opposing pitching and entertain the fans. Once, after he took a questionable umpire's call on a low strike, he set himself on his knees for the next pitch. Another time, after a long rain delay, Rabbit took the field in rubber boots and, while slumping, went to to 'bat" with a tennis racket in his hands. After forcing out a sliding runner at second base, he'd sometimes sit atop the poor opponent for a couple of seconds.

Rabbit Maranville recorded 3,524 putouts in Boston, 1,056 putouts in Pittsburgh, 162 putouts in Chicago, 138 putouts in Brooklyn, and 253 putouts in St. Louis - the most putouts in a career by any shortstop in Major League history!
